Who was he?

• Little known of his life prior to 1297
• Born in 1270
• Possibly the son of a Scottish knight
• Educated
• Possibly military experience

The story

• After capturing Balliol King Edward I carried
• out the following
• Demanded that Scottish nobles sign the Ragman

• Appointed the earl of Surrey as Governor of
  Scotland and Hugh Cressingham as treasurer
• Englishmen were appointed as sheriffs in places
  like Stirling and Lanark to keep law and order

The story

• English rule was harsh and unpopular
• In May 1297 Wallace killed Sir William Hazelrig,
  sheriff of Clydesdale as an act of revenge for
  the death of his wife Marion Braidfute
• Wallace was already an outlaw for refusing to
  sign the ragman roll

The rebellion

• Wallace swore revenge for his wife and many
  people including Andrew Murray joined him
• They captured many castles including Dundee,
  Aberdeenshire and Mearns
• They met in September 1297 at Stirling to fight
  the English
