Title: Digital Health

Digital Health
  • ES 242, Spring 2008

2
Abstract
  • Through the use of multiple non-invasive sensors,
we will monitor the health of an elderly person.
Any sensor on the person will be wireless, and
environmental sensors will be wired to a base
station. At the station we will collect and
compile the data, and statistically analyze the
data for changes in the persons health.

The Beginning

Environment Monitoring
  • Magnetic Door Switch
  • Place by doors to monitor movement
  • Already in place sometimes for security
  • Pressure Switch Sensing
  • Placed on item like telephone or fridge door to
    check for item usage
  • Also in specific walking/stepping areas
  • Motion Sensors
  • Placed sensors in areas people walked threw
    without disturbing them everyday life
  • A good compromise from cameras

Environment monitoring
  • These kinds of devices can collect excellent data
for monitoring both physical and mental health
  • By monitoring movement, and schedule you can see
how far along some-ones recovery is, as well as
    their mental stability.

Walking Accessory Sensor
  • What is being measured?
  • How to install the force sensors onto the walker,
    to measure the force applied
  • Bottom of the leg
  • Wrapped under the rubber cap
  • Two cylinders inside the leg
  • Connecting the force sensor to the board

Data Logging/Analysis
  • PIC
  • Transmitter/Receiver
  • Analog vs. Digital
  • Wireless vs. Wired
  • Data Acquisition
  • 8-bit vs. 16-bit
  • Serial vs. Parallel
  • Tri-State Buffer/Encoder

13
Data Logging/Analysis
14
The Complete System
  • 3 sets of sensors (walker, shoe, environmental)
feed an analog or digital signal into a computer.
  • The computer program (LabView) provides an output
in a waveform graph of the data collected.

15
Expected Results
  • The resulting graph allows the viewer to analyze
    the signal from the sensors.
  • Ideally, this analysis could allow a medical
professional to provide an accurate diagnosis.

What The Graphs Determine
  • A graphical output displays the pressure exerted
    on the sensor.
  • This pressure is determined by the output
voltage, and is a rational representation of the
force on the shoes/walker by the person.

19
Goals For the Future
  • Further develop the computer program to analyze
    graphical data on its own.
  • Minimize area taken up by sensors.
  • Provide sensors that work better from further
    distances with less battery power.
  • Add noise gate to cancel out unwanted sound
    vibrations in the graph.
