Title: Types of Chemical Reactions

1
Types of Chemical Reactions
2
(No Transcript)
3
Combination/ Synthesis
  • 2 or more substances combine to form one new
    substance
  • Ex S O2 ? SO2
  • SO3(g) H2O(l) ? H2SO4(aq)

4
Decomposition Reaction
  • A substance is broken down into two or more
    smaller substances.
  • Ex CaCO3 ? CaO CO2
  • 2H2O(l) ? 2H2(g) O2(g)

5
Problems
  • Predict the products for the following reactions.
  • NiCO3 ? NiO ___
  • Ag2O ? Ag(s) ___
  • Ca S ?
  • Fe O2 ?
  • Mg O2 ?

6
Single Replacement Reactions
  • Where 1 element takes the place of another
    element in a molecule.
  • General form of reaction
  • 1. A BX ? AX B
  • 2. AX Y ? AY X
  • Ex 2Na(s) 2H2O(l) ? 2NaOH(aq) H2 (g)
  • Cl2(g) 2KI(s) ? 2KCl(s) I2(g)

8
Double Replacement Reaction
  • Where the cations of two different molecules
switch places to form two new molecules.
  • Ex Ba(OH)2(aq) Na2SO4(aq) ? BaSO4(s)
    2NaOH(aq)
  • NaOH(aq) HCl(aq) ? NaCl(aq) H2O(l)

9
Combustion Reaction
  • Where a substance is burned in the presence of
oxygen to produce heat and usually light.
  • There are 2 types
  • Inorganic
  • Organic
  • 1

10
  • 1. Inorganic (no carbon)
  • Ex 2Mg O2 ? 2MgO
  • 2. Organic we use hydrocarbons
  • (formed of C and H)
  • Ex 2C6H6 15O2 ? 12CO2 6H2O
  • Organic combustion always produces water and
carbon dioxide, just balance out the equation!

11
Sometimes there is heat!
  • Thermal energy heat
  • Heat may be a reactant or a product
  • If heat leaves the reaction (exits) then it is
exothermic. Hint the container feels hot
  • Heat product because it was produced and
    released.

12
  • If the heat enters the reaction then it is
endothermic. Hint the container feels cooler.
  • Heat reactant because it was used up and taken
    away from the container

13
Chemical Equations using heat
  • Exothermic
  • A B ? C D heat
  • (hot to touch! Ouch!)
  • Endothermic
  • A B heat ? C D
  • (cool to touch, brrrrr!)
