Some considerations
  • What is the water sector?
  • Is there a land sector?
  • Are there commonalities between land and water
    issues?
  • Are land and water issues linked/ integrated?
  • The issue of scales!

Uncertainty will be the rule as it always has
17
Pressure on resources will continue to grow...
  • Agriculture 70.....double to 2050?
  • Industry 20....rapid increase, pollution
  • Municipal 10....some increase, pollution
  • Great national and regional differences
  • Increase 6-fold since 1900 decoupling?
  • Other users not well integrated energy?

Considerations for the discussion...1
  • Climate variability/change adaptation land and
    water management clearly essential
  • Water security, food security, energy security,
economic security------are all linked to land and
water issues and thus to climate change
    adaptation
  • Understanding drivers and interactions.
  • Land and water issues are local CC adaptation
issues still more discussed on a global scales

20
Considerations for the discussion....2
  • Balance between sectoral and integrated
    approaches
  • Separate initiatives vs. integration in regular
    planning and management processes
  • Management will need to deal increasingly with
    competing users and usages (conflict
    resolution)
  • Focus on resilience building coping with
    variability.
  • Assess/Invest in technology/infrastructure
(backed by incentives to use them)
  • Explore and implement no-regrets policies and
    investments
  • Increase efficiency too much supply driven
  • Move beyond traditional sectors

21
So, can CC adaptation push the water/land
agenda?
  • Push cross-sectoral priorities
  • Positive impacts on governance
  • Mobilize financial resources
  • Five principles of the Nairobi Statement on
Integrated Land and Water Resources Management
    for Climate Change Adaptation provides
    interesting framework
