3The Task
- Following 11th September 2001 reaction by US
government introduce 100 screening across
the country
- Tender developed and released for bid early
2002
- Requirement - install combination of EDS and
ETD stations at 438 US airports
- Engineering, architectural, airport consultants
and construction firms required for the
exercise
- Boeing awarded contract to oversee the
effective installation of machines into
airports

4Issues to be Addressed
- Model airport using data from architects
planners
- Identify modelling resources and conduct
training
- What number, location, and combination of
machines?
- What space is required for machines and people?
- What protocol to best process people and bags?
- What queue and procedure setup for maximum
efficiency?
- Passenger flow pattern optimization
- Baggage room processing procedures
- Passenger and baggage matching
- Passenger and baggage tracking from check-in to
loading

5Beginning TSA project
- Create template models for various security
protocols to - determine most workable combinations
- 100 ETD post ticketing, Solution 1
- 100 ETD post ticketing, Solution 2
- Simultaneous ETD check-in (Southwest Airlines)
- EDS/ETD hybrid post-ticketing

6Simulation was used to
- Model an entire airport terminal environment
or just discrete areas
- Assist managers and designers by predicting
delays or problems - for nearly any aspect of passenger and
baggage processing
- Associate every passenger and every bag with a
specific flight, - provide a description and security processing
record
- Determine processing systems capacity limits,
hardware and - staffing requirements, over any time period
of interest
- Reduce risk and offer cost avoidance
opportunities by analyzing - proposed changes and what-if scenarios

7Lessons Learnt
- Early planning avoid undue inconvenience
- Modelling and simulation is key
- Recognised PaxSims comprehensive planning
capability - and visualisation features very valuable for
decision-making
- Critical - Communication from outset with
stakeholders
