  like you.
• So build relationships from day 1!
• But, you are an Engineerthis is hard for you.
  How do you do it?

Building Relationships

• Rule 1 Pay attention
• Learn what others like and learn something about
  it
• Ask them about it, let them talk. People LOVE to
  talk about themselves, their family etc.
• Know what they want out of their career and why
  they are there.
• Send them articles that youve read that you
  think would interest them.
• Rule 2 Join in
• Talk to them (in person, email, or IM)
• Go to meetings early and join in the networking
  time
• Lunch, power walks, DONT always eat at your
  desk

• Rule 3 Laugh
• Share pertinent Dilberts with only a few
• Find something to repeat as a team
• Put up a Picture ask for comments
• Rule 4 Complement
• Find something to compliment them for and mention
  it in an email, copy their boss sometimes
• Ask for a Coaching Moment
• NEVER BRAG ABOUT YOURSELF Be humble

• Ask to be introduced
• Express interest in certain topics or projects
• Join professional groups
• Not only Techie ones
• Marketing
• Public Speaking
• Community related

Leadership or Management?

• Lead Dont manage
• What does that mean?
• Be confident You Can Do Anything!
• Ask others for feedback.
• Practice what you preachbe willing to take risks
• Never lie your reputation is like change in a
  pocket
• Understand your team members what do they want?
  need?
• Reward them with work they enjoy
• Give Feedback through example or suggestion

• Admit when you dont know know when to ask for
  help, and who to ask
• Inspect what you expect Trust but verify
• Never blind side
• Understand the company strategy and that politics
  plays a big part Know where you, your project
  and team fit in. Fight for them.
