Title: EUMECHA project Mechatronics and Intelligent Manufacturing

1
EUMECHA project Mechatronics and
Intelligent Manufacturing
  • Hubert Van Belle
  • ManuFuture-HU Meeting
  • Budapest, November 6, 2008

2
MECHATRONICS (1)
  • Approach aiming at the synergistic integration of
    mechanics, electronics, control theory, and
computer science within the product design and
manufacturing, in order to improve and/or
optimise its functionality (French standard NF E
    01-010)
  • Design paradigm which is the basis for concurrent
engineering of machines where all design aspects
    (mechanical, control, interfacing, programming)
    are simultaneously considered, leading towards
machines with superior behaviour, compared to the
    machines designed with the traditional
    non-integrated sequential engineering approach
    (prof. Hendrik Van Brussel)

3
MECHATRONICS (2)
  • Mechatronic product product with the ability of
    perceiving its environment, processing
information, communicating, and acting on its
environment with a full level of mechatronic
integration, from a functional and physical
integration point of view (French standard NF E
    01-010)
  • As machines are of an inherently
    interdisciplinary nature, the mechatronics
paradigm is adopted as a design approach. The
mechatronic approach leads to globally optimised
machines and machine systems (prof. Hendrik Van
    Brussel).

E! 4193 EUMECHA
  • EUREKA project European Mechatronics and
    Intelligent Manufacturing
  • Mechatronics is of vital importance for the
    European manufacturing industry and especially
    the machinery sector
  • First priority the initiation of concrete
    industry-led PRO-FACTORY projects
  • In the longer term and if successful the
establishment of a cluster (or co-operation with
    an other industry-oriented structure)

9
EUMECHA GOALS
  • Quick impact of the eumecha-pro roadmaps on
    research activities and industrial implementation
    of promising research results
  • Initiation of industry-led EUREKA projects
  • Assessment of the potential innovation impact of
new developments, detection the industrial needs
    and prioritisation of the roadmaps
  • Creation of a viable Mechatronics and Intelligent
    Manufacturing EUREKA cluster organisation

10
APPROACH
  • Network with industry and research community
  • Start as an EUREKA-project
  • Definition phase and implementation phase
  • Technology roadmaps as guidelines
  • Combination of technology push and market pull
  • Focus on the machinery sector as important
    innovation driver
  • Creation of conditions which are favourable to
shape the new Mechatronics and Intelligent
    Manufacturing cluster

11
EXPECTED RESULTS (1)
  • Network in which the research community and the
    industry are actively involved
  • Industry-oriented EUREKA projects
  • Mechanism able to adjust and refine roadmaps and
to detect new industrial needs and research
    priorities.
  • These priorities will be fed to the encompassing
ManuFuture Platform and to the Framework
    Programme for the next calls

12
EXPECTED RESULTS (2)
  • Mechanism able to identify best practices
  • Best practices are very stimulating examples for
    industrial companies
  • Updated roadmap and best practice publication
    promoted at public networking events
  • Plan for the creation of a new EUREKA cluster and
to assure the continuity of this cluster
  • Group of industrial companies and funding
institutions willing to support the cluster
initiative for a sufficient long period of
    time

13
PARTICIPATION (1)
  • EUMECHA (E! 4193) is open for industrial oriented
    research centres, innovative industrial companies
    and industrial associations
  • Companies active in the machinery sector and
willing to play an important part in a future
    EUMECHA cluster are especially invited
  • An original combination of technologies and the
introduction of new enabling technologies are
considered as a successful innovation receipt for
    the established industries (Orgalime)

14
PARTICIPATION (2)
  • Organisations from Austria, Belgium, Czech
    Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland,
Italy, Poland, Spain and Turkey expressed their
    interest
  • EUMECHA is still open for additional partners
  • Belspo is willing to fund the EUMECHA secretariat
    held by Agoria
  • At this stage a limited national funding could be
sufficient to support the contribution of the
    other project participants

15
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
  • Establish a consortium with participation of
    research centres and industrial companies
  • Contact the EUREKA National Project Coordinator
    (NPC)
  • Look for local funding (if necessary)
  • Contact the EUMECHA-secretariat
  • Sign the EUREKA form
  • Ask the EUREKA NPC to support the EUMECHA project
    proposal
