Emotionally charged relationship

• The therapist must be recognized as someone who
  is qualified to provide help
• The therapist and client must form a meaningful,
  connected relationship client must feel
  comfortable confiding fully in the therapist

Healing setting

• A healing setting with a healer (professional)
  who the client believes can provide help
• Again, the therapist must be recognized as
  someone who is qualified to provide help
• Must be in a professional setting

Rationale

• A rationale with a plausible explanation of
  symptoms and a procedure for resolving them and
  this rationale is accepted by client and helper
  (i.e., client and therapist believe in the
  treatment)
• Present client with explanation of symptoms
• Decide on an approach that will likely be helpful

Active participation

• The procedure requires active participation of
  both client and therapist

Agreed-upon treatment

• Inspires expectations of help (hope)
• Provides new learning experiences
• Arouses emotions
• Offers opportunities for practice

• Therapies that provoke emotional arousal have
  more positive outcomes
• Placebo treatments (which inspire expectation of
  hope) but do not actually implement specific
  therapeutic techniques (e.g., CBT techniques) do
  very well.
