The Work Plan
Before I propose a plan, lets review
  • Some basic consideration
  • The evolving handbook
  • Recommendations from the class (in particular,
    the task group).

4
Basic Considerations
  • Everyone has to leave this class having something
    concrete to DO
  • It should be a relatively equal amount of work
  • It should take two weeks
  • The whole should be greater than the parts
  • It should contribute to our general, evolving
plan to learn meta-lessons from an analysis of
    past lessons learned documents
  • It should require the application of a systems
    perspective to humanitarian relief

5
Wiki
  • http//staff.washington.edu/rbkemp/wiki/index.php?
    titleLLHandbook

6
Proposed Plan
  • Select and Read 5 lessons learned documents.
  • They should be
  • Unique (i.e. we should end up with 75 different
    documents),
  • Diverse (i.e. NOT 5 from the same disaster, or
    organization, or time)
  • Significant

7
Proposed Plan (continued)
  • Make a list of the lessons learned in your 5
documents. For each lesson, provide the impact
measure that justified its being included as a
    lesson learned (if any).
  • Categorize your list items
  • Since this is still exploratory, lets not begin
with a finalized categorization schema, but given
our basic considerations and justifications in
the handbook, consider categories such as
    systemic/isolated reoccurring/one of a kind
    disaster-based/general single organization/consor
    tium international/regional intra-organizational
    /inter-/environmental, etc.

8
Proposed Plan (continued)
  1. Meet with your team to combine lists, including a
    single agreed upon categorization schema
  2. Order your combined list from most systemic
    lesson to least
  3. Analyze your ordered, combined list from a
    (humanitarian relief) systems perspective
