Product Goals
  • -To create character webs as a means to analyze
    the traits of characters in the story.
  • -To produce a mobile that describes one of the
    characters in the story using new vocabulary
    words.
  • -To produce a final paper describing character
    mobiles.
  • -For students to achieve a sense of
    accomplishment after reading a chapter book.
  • -To teach students compare and contrast skills by
    analyzing the different themes and characters
    within the novel.
  • -To improve students ability to make predictions
    based on information acquired before and after
    reading parts of the novel.

Process Goals
  • -For students to enjoy reading the text.
  • -Create an open, comfortable discussion
    environment for students to relate their own
    experiences and give reactions to the events in
    the story.
  • -To have students work with classmates in giving
    and receiving constructive criticism on their
    writing.
  • -For students to enjoy seeing how the themes in
    145th Street are reflected in contemporary music
    via Tracy Chapman song.
  • -To have lively class discussions focused on how
    various themes in 145th Street compare with their
    own lives and experiences.
  • -To enjoy working on character webs in small
    groups.
  • -To improve vocabulary by using thesauruses to
    construct character webs.

  • -Drawing and writing responses to the themes
    presented in the song
  • -Class discussion of responses

    will relates to the story.

    a class and round robin in small groups).
  • -Journal responses making predictions
  • -Reading quizzes to keep students accountable for
    the material
  • -Creating character webs in small groups
  • -Analyze a character of their choice from the
    text and portray this character with ten
    descriptive adjectives
  • -Searching for pictures- class time to work on
    mobiles

    character webs and mobiles

Multicultural Aspects
  • Book Selection about African American and Latino
    residents of Harlem
  • Magazines students will be encouraged to bring
    in magazines that are multicultural
  • Discussions We will discuss the culture in
    Harlem as compared to the cultures of various
    students in the class and cultures we have
    previously studied in class

Help for Struggling Readers
  • Vocabulary students will include 10 vocabulary
    words of their choice from the text and include
    definitions they looked up in a dictionary
  • Character Webs students will expand their
    vocabularies by finding words to describe the
    character
  • Thesaurus Use students will look up 3 synonyms
    for their character descriptions

In Class Reading students will have some of the
stories read to them. All students will have the
opportunity to read aloud but will know a day in
advance so they can prepare
