Multi-lateral aid given by organisations such as
the UN and the EU. Aid is not tied. UN work
through Specialised Agencies, e.g. WHO, WFP,
Unicef, FAO.
Social needs healthcare, education, access to
clean water. Economic needs debt relief, trade,
agricultural development. Political needs end to
civil war, better government, less corruption
Politics of Aid Need and Power
Bi-lateral aid given by one country to another.
Can be tied, strings attached, benefit the donor
country more. UK aid is no longer tied. Given
through the DFiD
Social, Political, Economic need for aid and
reasons for giving aid
Problems debt, corruption, civil war, floods,
drought, AIDS, Malaria, terms of trade
Solutions emergency aid, food, tents, medicine.
Long term development aid such as road building,
schools, farming projects, experts, financial,
military.
Humanitarian aid given following man-made or
natural disasters, given out of compassion or
pity, often organised by charities such as Oxfam,
Red Cross, MSF.
Cash crops tea, sugar, coffee, cotton, cocoa
