The Serengeti In Tanzania
3Where is Tanzania?
Lamadi
- Tanzania is an East African country that borders
Lake Victoria, the largest freshwater body of
water in the world. The schools are located a few
miles from the banks of Lake Victoria in Lamadi.

6Class is now in session!
7Information about the Schools
- There are two different schools participating,
Kalango and Kanyama
- I visited one of the schools last summer. It has
650 students, 10 teachers, and 6 classrooms. Some
classrooms do not even have roofs.
- Pennekamp has only around 500 students but it has
25 teachers and 22 classrooms.
- The schools do not have any electricity and they
use old chalkboards instead of white boards.
- Many of the classes are forced to be taught
outside in the hot sun of Africa where there are
biting insects called tse-tse flies.
- Your classes will be writing to the Kanyama
School that has students ages 9-11.

Tanzania who is helping with the program
9Information about the Students
- The students are very enthusiastic about
interacting with new people, especially American
students.
- They walk up to 6 miles each way to school.
- The kids have very few school supplies. They use
the stubs of pencils for weeks until they can
afford to buy a new one. A new pencil is like a
birthday present for them.
- The students are learning 3 or 4 different
languages in school. One or two regional
dialects, English, and Swahili.
- Many children drop out of school which limits
their future. By writing the students letters,
you will encourage them to stay in school and get
a good education.
10Kishosha and the students are anxious to receive
your letters!

of their flag for you

12- The students get very little interaction with the
world outside of their villages so you will get
to show them a different way of life.
- They live less than 20 miles from the Serengeti
but they have never been there or seen the
animals.
13The Program
- Each of you will be writing
a letter to one
of the
Tanzanian Students.
- By the end of the year, you will get a letter
back from your Pen Pal.
- You have the freedom to write about whatever you
want. Talk about yourself and remember to ask
questions for the Tanzanian students to answer.
- This will be a great way for you to learn about a
completely different culture from the other side
of the world.
14Writing Recommendations
- Remember, you can write about anything you want
but here are a few ideas to get you stared
