MISSIONUABSOM

• The School of Medicine is dedicated to the
  education of physicians and scientists in all of
  the disciplines of medicine and biomedical
  investigation for careers in practice, teaching
  and research. Necessary to this educational
  mission is the provision of outstanding medical
  care and services and the enhancement of new
  knowledge through clinical and basic biomedical
  research.

• 1859 Medical College of Alabama opens in Mobile
• 1894 Birmingham Medical College organizes
• 1915 Birmingham Medical College is terminated
• 1920 Medical College of Alabama moves to
  Tuscaloosa

• 1936 Birmingham extension center of UA opens
• 1945 Four year Medical College of Alabama
  created in Birmingham
• 1969 University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB)
  becomes one of the new 3 campus UA programs
  (Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa)

• 1980 University of Alabama System recognizes
  one medical school, the University of Alabama
  School of Medicine, located in Birmingham with
  programs at the Huntsville and Tuscaloosa
  campuses
• 1995 50th Anniversary of the Academic Health
  Center
• 1996 UAB Health System established
