Criteria for Drafts and Final PapersENG 3014
  • Prepared by
  • Dr. Kay Picart

In general, here are the criteria for your final
paper (the 4th criterion is a new one, which I
see as necessary, given the way in which
discussions in class have been going thus far).
  • 1.  Spelling Mechanics Structural Detail These
essays are to consist of 4-5 pages, typewritten
in a standard format (MLA, APA, Chicago or any
other standard format so long as the usage is
consistent), double-spaced, with 11 point font
    and 1 inch margins.

3
  • 2.  Presentation of Arguments  Your essay must
have a clear thesis, which is to be followed by a
series of arguments that support your thesis.

4
  • 3.  Synthesis of Critical Theory and Applications
(e.g. films, works of art, music, etc.)
Evaluates the overall synthesis of ideas derived
from the theories presented in the course
    readings and their relationship various
applications in film, music, literature, art,
    etc.

5
  • Be specific in your arguments and try to avoid
obvious or far-reaching statements. Creativity is
assessed by your ability to often put unrelated
ideas into a single conceptual framework and back
these up with adequate and compelling proof.

6
  • 4.  Comparative Analysis  Choose at least one
thinker from one time period (e.g., classical and
modern, like Plato and Descartes, or Dante and
Burke or classic and contemporary--e.g., Plato
and Lacan) or modern and contemporary--e.g.,
    Nietzsche and Freud).

7
  • 5.  Evidence of research  have at least 12
sources, five of which may come from material we
have used/are going to use in class.

8
  • The best of luck!!!!
