Title: Professor Judith Bishop

1
Professor Judith Bishop
  • Farewell Breakfast
  • 18 June 2009

2
Dearest Professor Bishop
  • You are crossing the ocean, henceforth saying
good-bye to South Africa for the time being.
Saying good-bye to your closest friends and
family. Saying good-bye to all that you have held
dear over the past couple of years. Saying
good-bye to the country that raised you from her
    soil.

3
However
  • Your closest friends, family and colleagues have
learned to love you, and they still do. You
inspired them with your warm heart, tender ways
and encouraging words You led the way not in a
threatening manner, but rather in a manner which
inspires courage not due to fear, but due to
    aspiration.

4
Luckily
  • Luckily you love technology. Luckily we have all
managed to cope with it. Luckily we get things
like Skype, e-mails, Facebook and apparently
there is something known as TwitterI do not know
it yet, but I am sure you do. Because, you LOVE
    technology.

5
Therefore
  • Dear Professor, although you are crossing the
oceanyou are ever closer to our hearts. Your
presence will still be felt because you will not
forget us. You will be a constant reminder when I
look at the Mac. You will be a constant graceful
personality at the numerous conferences. And your
    pictures will only multiply.

6
Therefore
  • We have not lost you. We will never forgot you.
Nor will Pretoria ever forget you. We are all
here today not because it is a free breakfastbut
because we wanted to be here, with you. May these
last few days be extraordinarily special.

From Scott Hazelhurst
  • Dear Judith
  • Best wishes for your new venture. You have made
    a huge contribution to the
  • development of computer science in South Africa
    and am sure you will
  • continue to make an impact.
  • At a personal level, you have been very
influential -- as my first year
  • lecturer, as my honours lecturer, my first boss
and a wise counsel and aid
  • ever since. There are two incidents in particular
    that I remember your
  • kindness and help in my honours year where a bout
    of chicken pox in the
  • middle of exams plus over-commitment in student
    politics hit my hard and
  • you supported me in catching up and your help in
giving me my first job and
  • giving me support. Most of all I would like to
commend you as a role model
  • in your enthusiasm for computer science as a
    discipline. You have shown me
  • what exciting field it is, and how important it
    is to communicate that in
  • teaching and in research.
  • All the best, and keep in touch!

From Professor John Skinner
  • Dear Judith
  • It really is sad when the University and
South Africa lose such a talented scientist to a
western country so fully endowed already with
    such talent.
  • On behalf of the Royal Society of South
Africa hearty congratulations on what must surely
be a prestigious promotion and our very best
wishes for a successful transfer and continued
outstanding progress in your chosen career.
  • I am looking forward to maintaining personal
contact for the next few months at any rate, via
the festschrift to honour emeritus professor
Derek Henderson FRSSAf and I hope you will
continue to retain contact with science at large
in South Africa through your Fellowship of the
Society.I should add that, had you remained in
South Africa, the plan was to involve you
strongly in Royal Society affairs, especially in
promoting your branch of science and also
    involving more women.
  • With warm regards and best wishes

From Anke Rädel
  • Dear Judy
  • I am sad to hear that you will be leaving the
University of Pretoria soon! You have always
been a wonderful sounding board and source of
information for me in all aspects of computer
science! You have made invaluable contributions
on various panels of the NRF and the former FRD
and I was particularly grateful for your lucid
assessment of applications for NRF scholarships
many years ago! A BIG thank you for all your
help and advice over the years!
  • I wish you well for the new chapter in your
life and hope that it will bring you good health
    and exciting new challenges.
  • I will certainly miss knowing that I cannot
call on you any more in my professional capacity
but hope that our paths will still cross somehow,
    someplace.
  • Fond regards
