Situation of the CLYD
SERVICE PROVIDER FOR FARMER INCOME SUPPORT
PROJECT (Projecto de Apoio ao Rendimento Agrícola)

• In the late 1990s, outbreaks of Coconut
  Lethal Yellowing
• Disease (CLYD) were confirmed in areas
  of commercial
• smallholder plantings in coastal Zambézia.
  
• By 2003 about one percent of the total area
  was affected
• but with several new disease foci in both
  provinces.
• By 2006 about three percent of the total
  area was
• affected
• Disease-affected areas in Zambézia have
  expanded
• considerably since 2006.
• Currently, about twenty-five percent of the
  total coconut
• area of Zambézia and Nampula is likely to
  be affected,
• although in certain areas there is no
  remaining
• production.

The objectives of the Farmer Income Support
Project

• To stop the spread of CLYD
• to improve productivity of coconut products and
  encourage diversification into other cash crop
  production
• Project area
• All coastal districts of Zambezia and Moma and
  Angoche in Nampula province

Activity 1 CLYD Control and Mitigation Services.

• Three sub-activities are envisioned
• to clear farmers land of dead palms and help
  smallholders to replant with selected Mozambique
  Green Tall seedlings and alternative short-term
  crops
• control spread of disease by prompt removal and
  destruction of infection sources
• a research initiative that will emphasize
  germplasm resistance screening, epidemiological
  analysis, and early disease detection
  administered by IIAM.
