What is the Foraker Act?

• This law was sponsored by Senator Joseph B.
  Foraker. It was enacted on April 12, 1900. The
  Foraker Act came into place to help the People of
  Puerto Rico. The Act applied to the adjacent
  islands and waters of islands east of Greenwich.

When and why it was passed?

• It provided a civil government for Puerto Rico.
  It established a presidential type of government
  in which the governor, the cabinet and judges of
  the supreme court were appointed to president.
  The act benefited the U.S economically because
  the island was incorporated within the U.S
  tariff system, establishing free movement of
  goods between Puerto Rico and the mainland.

Why was this act important to Puerto Rico?

• This act pleased no one in Puerto Rico because
  it possessed less autonomy than under monarchial
  Spain.
