Leading with Values
  • Finding your voice is absolutely critical to
    becoming an authentic leader
  • To find your voice you must engage in two
    essentials
  • Clarify your values
  • Express yourself
  • To become a credible leader, first you have to
comprehend fully the values, beliefs, and
    assumptions that drive you
  • Values also serve as guides to action
  • Values are empowering
  • Values also motivate
  • People want to be part of something larger than
    themselves
  • You must know what you care about
  • Kouzes, J.M. and Posner, B.Z. (2002). The
    leadership challenge. Jossey-Bass, San Francisco.

8
Leading with Values
  • Values-Based Leadership is when the leaders
values are the guiding principles that determine
leader behavior, which, in turn, motivates and
inspires follower behavior. The end result is the
high performance required for an organization to
    achieve competitive advantage and future
    success.
  • Robert Preziosi, Nova Southeastern University

9
Leading With Values
  • Identifying your personal value system
  • What do you value? Think of things that
  • are important to you
  • define your fundamental character
  • supply meaning to your life and work (within
    your organization)
  • influence the decisions you make
  • compel you to take a stand
  • provide an atmosphere in which you are most
    productive

Values-Based Leadership
  • Step 1 Look over the list of values on the What
do I Value in Life worksheet. This is not a
semantics exercise, so feel free to cross out the
descriptive words in parenthesis that have no
meaning to you. Insert others if you wish. Circle
each items level of importance to you.
  • Step 2 Select your top eight values from the
worksheet and rank them in order of preference
(from most important to least important). If you
have a value that is not on the list, feel free
    to write-in that value.

11
Values-Based Leadership
  • Step 3 Define each of your top eight values in
    your own words.
  • Step 4 Think of your organization members,
friends and family members. Would they be able
to select the same top eight values for you based
on what they know of you and the behaviors you
    exhibit?

Values-Based Leadership
  • Commitment is what transforms a promise into
reality. It is the words that speak boldly of
your intentions. And the actions which speak
louder than the words. It is making time when
there is none. Coming through time after time
after time, year after year after year.
Commitment is the stuff character is made of the
power the change the face of things. It is the
daily triumph of integrity over skepticism.
  • Unknown, commonly attributed to Abraham Lincoln

14
Leading with your Values
  • In the past week, how have you applied your
    values in your organization?
  • What behavior will you change that is not inline
    with your top values?
  • What initiative/behavior will you begin to do for
your organization that will promote your values?

15
Pulling it all Together
  • What we accomplished
  • You are now ready!
  • You have identified your top eight values!
  • You are equipped to make the right decisions for
    your organizations!
