Title: Coordinate Geometry

1
Coordinate Geometry
  • OBJECTIVES
  • write graph linear equations
  • use statistics with linear equations
  • locate points in space

2
Graphing linear equations
  • Slope m
  • Slope-intercept form of the equation
  • y mx b, where m slope b
    y-intercept
  • Standard form Ax By C
  • x-term y-term on left of and constant
on right. The A B are integers, A is
    positive.

3
Writing linear equations
  • Point-slope form of a line y y1 m ( x x1
    )
  • where m slope (x1, y1) is a given point
the x and y are the 2 variables of the axis

Given point (3, 2) a slope of m 2 The
equation of the line y 2 2 ( x
3) --theres only 1 equation that fits

4
Statistics scatter plots slopes
  • Scatter plots show the relationship between 2
variables (like x speed y cost) from data
    from surveys, observations, etc.
  • They look like a bunch of points plotted on a
    graph
  • Imagine a line of best fit running through the
pointspick 2 points on the line
  • Use the point-slope form to write the equation
  • Solve it for y

5
Coordinates in space
z
  • Points are ordered triples
  • (x, y, z)
  • Distance between A (x1, y1, z1) and B (x2, y2,
    z2)
