The village of Silvepura
  • Silvepura is a Christian village
  • It is about 25 kilometres outside Bangalore
  • Most of the villagers are untouchables which
    probably explains their conversion to
    Christianity in the past

13
Silvepura
  • I have developed a unit of work to teach children
about Silvepura as a contrasting locality to
    Dorchester, developing our geography curriculum
  • This will challenge some stereotypes and
preconceptions many of us have about India

14
Bangalore is at the heart of the rapid
development of the Indian economy it is a city
of huge contrasts.
15
Rubbish the issue of plastic?
16
Fairtrade
  • The School Council has asked about what the
school can do to improve recycling
  • It has also asked about Fairtrade products
  • Maybe we could start with the staff tea and coffee

17
Geography
  • As geography co-ordinator I want to communicate
to all the staff the key concepts and questions
of geographical enquiry that will help us to
study any place in a better way to develop the
    childrens skills and knowledge

18
Other ideas to use the experience at The Prince
of Wales School
  • India as a stimulus for this years Arts Week
  • Booking Anjali Sahi for a dance workshop in
    October
  • Using Indian music (modern and classical and
spiritual) in Year 1 dance unit of work

19
Other ideas
  • Reception
  • Dressing up in Indian clothes
  • Playing with Indian toys
  • Playing Indian games
  • Acting out Indian folk tales

20
Other ideas
  • We have been trying this year to develop
childrens awareness of food and farming by links
    with local farms
  • My Indian experience can be used to teach
children about the similarities and differences
between food and farming in India and UK

21
Food
  • Caroline Morgan has been helping us to apply to
become a flagship school for the Food for Life
organisation which will involve a range of
    improvements, including looking to further
    develop our food curriculum
  • I have brought back a book of recipes for
    vegetarian dishes eaten in Silvepura

22
Food
23
Farming
24
Farming
25
Farming
  • I have produced several powerpoints for use with
children on Indian farming and farm animals

26
Rights Respecting Schools
  • One of our current school initiatives is working
towards the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools
    Award
  • I plan to use the Indian experience to enhance
    this in several ways

27
Rights Respecting Schools
  • This term each class is doing some work on one of
the UNICEF rights eg right to play
  • I plan to contribute to this by providing an
    Indian slant
  • I hope this will also help to develop childrens
    global awareness

28
Challenging stereotypes
29
Indian culture
  • Dance
  • Music
  • Clothes
  • Religion
  • spirituality

30
The best silk in India is produced in Karnataka
31
Shopping for saris
32
Artefacts
33
Spirituality
  • India is an intensely spiritual culture
  • Visiting has made me think deeply about how
secular our own society has become, including
    school
  • I want to do something about this

34
Spirituality
  • We are losing our own customs
  • I want to revive the celebration of things like
    Shrove Tuesday, May Day etc
  • I want to introduce a more overtly spiritual
    element in our assemblies

35
Religion
  • I have learnt a lot more about Hinduism
  • This will help our 2 units of work in Year 2 and
    4
  • I have also come to the conclusion that we assume
our children already know many aspects of
Christianity when in fact they do not.
  • Our RE curriculum needs to change to reflect
    this.
