New Solutions for Regional Collaboration.
  • SCRC is a region of 8 colleges,
  • --Antelope Valley CC
  • --College of the Canyons
  • --Moorpark CC

  • --Oxnard CC
  • --Santa Barbara City College

4
New Solutions for Regional Collaboration..
  • The SCRC includes vocational deans, Economic
    Development Center Directors, Tech Prep
    Directors, and Contract Ed practitioners.
  • The challenge is to communicate assertively,
professionally, and cordially in order to
    accomplish regional business and develop
innovative ideas for both credit courses and
    economic development initiatives.

5
New Solutions for Regional Collaboration.
  • In the past, the region had engaged in
professional development activities as part of
the annual planning retreat, but many
timesthough great ideas were generatedthere was
no plan for continued follow up.
  • The region decided to do a significant
    professional development activity (the DiSC
social styles inventory) as part of the 2004
retreat. Further, we decided to engage in a
follow up activity to this at each regional
    meeting during the year.

es
  • Activities provide a neutral stage
  • to discuss sensitive communication issues.
  • Activities provide insight into social styles of
colleagues that yield benefits for collaboration
    beyond regional meetings.
  • Activities can be extrapolated back to each
    members working situations.
  • This practice has led to additional regional
    collaboration regarding campus professional
    development (both faculty staff) activities.
With the disappearance of state professional
development funds, regional meetings can provide
    an avenue for sharing ideas.

7
Why we chose the DiSC
  • Consortium members felt that communication issues
were the biggest professional development need.
  • To form a basis for improved collaboration, the
group decided to focus on social styles.

8
What is a DiSC assessment
  • It is not a Personality test
  • It is a Social Styles profile
  • Other profiles available
  • William Moulton Marston
  • Merrill-Reid
  • LaHaye/Littauer (Hippocrates)
  • Smalley/Trent (Animals)
  • Hartman (The Color Code)
  • True Colors
  • Keirsey

9
The Value
  • Profile itself is not critical
  • Profile activity creates the learning
    opportunities
  • Self discovery
  • External awareness
  • Sandbox
  • Introduction of the Platinum Rule

10
Its Your Turn
  • Please take a few minutes to complete the Quick
    DiSC instrument.
  • We will complete a short activity based on the
    profiles.

11
Ideas for regional collaboration
  • How would understanding social styles improve
    your regional collaboration?
  • What other skills would be good?
  • What are typical challenges you face in regional
    meetings?
  • Your solutions to these challenges!
