Title: ATP Study To Improve Cleaning of Environmental Surfaces in Patient Rooms

1
ATP Study To Improve Cleaning of Environmental
Surfaces in Patient Rooms
  • By Jack McGurk, REHS, MPA
  • Rick Parker, REH

2
A Call for Improved Cleaning Tracking
  • 2002 National estimates of healthcare associated
    infections (HAIs) and deaths was
  • 1.7 million HAIs
  • 98,987 associated deaths
  • These figures have not declined
  • Its time for action
  • Dr. John Snows action in 1854 to end the cholera
    epidemic in London
  • Now its our turn to take action to reduce HAIs

3
Proposed Plan of Action
  • Step 1
  • Assessment of current conditions
  • ATP monitoring of 14 High Risk Objects as done by
Dr. P.C. Carling in 23 acute care hospitals
    following terminal cleaning
  • This data provides a baseline from which to
    evaluate changes

4
Proposed Plan of Action
  • Step 2
  • Use Quality Improvement Plan-Do-Check-Act-Standard
ize Cycle to implement intervention strategy
  • Measure results and monitor intervention strategy
  • For example training staff on improved cleaning
    techniques
  • Use ATP tool to provide immediate feedback on
    cleaning
  • Use ATP tool to monitor change as compared to
    earlier baseline data

5
Proposed Plan of Action
  • Step 3
  • Standardize intervention if it is successful
  • New cleaning procedures
  • New training for staff
  • Continue to monitor using ATP tool

6
Proposed Plan of Action
  • Step 4
  • Publicize results
  • Use as process improvement for Joint Commission
  • Apply for awards
  • Determine if HAI rates or costs have declined
  • Let the community know of success
