Foundation for Research Science Technology
3
New Zealand needs to create NEW CUSTOMER
VALUE! by commercialising its new
technology into products that win in the market.
4
What we want to see happen in NZ
High Technology companies achieving volume export
sales NZ being recognised internationally for
its world class technology products Government
getting a real lift in export volume for its
investment in industry
5
What are some of the problems...
  • Business context Research often lacks a viable
business model or a value proposition to
    commercialise it
  • Industry Lack of alignment means Industry
doesnt necessarily want the technology on the
    lab bench
  • Start ups - Research Groups build expensive
start up company structures to commercialise
    their IP
  • Most SMEs dont understand the process around
    new market and technology commercialisation
  • FRST process does not adequately scrutinise a
companies technical or market development process
    capabilities

6
What we see currently
Technology Platform Company
World class Technology Product
THE GAP
Are there things FRST can do to close this GAP?
7
How we see the GAP closing
  • By adopting a model that enables
  • Significantly more emphasis on the CUSTOMER in
    all development activity
  • Early identification of research opportunities
that will yield the highest value returns
  • Better utilisation of our resources as a nation
    in the highest value markets
  • Knowledge sharing to ensure SMEs and CRIs in
particular can do what larger companies can do
  • Businesses that respond fast enough to the
window of opportunity to get to early profit
  • Product that is shipped with the polish they
need to win in the market
  • Companies need to become Commercialisation
    Specialists.

8
A New Model?
FRST assesses an organisations
commercialisation capability... along with
the opportunity.
9
How?
  • Using an assessment framework
  • Established in partnership with
    Commercialisation Specialists
  • Identify the GAP in commercialisation capability
  • Filter out low yield investments early

10
To achieve this we
  • Make it compelling for technology focused
    organisations to use Specialist
    Commercialisation Resources

11
A model
1. Company applies for grant 2. FRST assesses
against a framework 3. Rejects on capability
gaps 4. Company seeks accredited
Commercialisation Partner 5. Reapplies in
partnership 6. Funding is granted to partnership
in line with specified commercialisation
programme Accredited Commercialisation Partners
assist FRST in framework implementation and
refinement.
