FSC Principle 9 on HCVF

• Maintenance of High Conservation Value Forests (
  Natura 2000)
• Management activities in high conservation value
  forests shall maintain or enhance the attributes
  which define HCVF.
• 9.1 Complete assessment to determine presence of
  HCVF attributes, appropriate to scale and
  intensity of forest management.
• 9.3 The management plan shall include and
  implement specific measures that ensure
  maintaining and/or enhancing HCVF attributes
  consistent
• 9.4 Conduct annual monitoring to assess
  effectiveness of the measures employed to
  maintain or enhance the HCVF attributes.

Limitations

• Method to control that forest owners assist in
  securing favourable conservation status for
  Natura 2000 habitat types and species
• Not a Natura 2000 monitoring method in itself
  that is the responsibility of the owner according
  to FSC, only to provide evidence that the
  owner/manager carries out the monitoring
• Not a method to obtain actual data on favourable
  conservation status. That needs to be done next
  to the certification, but the certification makes
  sure that the owner/manager manages the forest so
  that HCVF Natura 2000 habitat types and species
  are likely to servive on long-term
