Title: What is Transportation
1What is Transportation?
- Transportation is the process by which
passengers or goods are moved or delivered from
one place to another.
2Transportation systems can be divided into four
types and their subtypes.
Land
Air
Water
Space
Fixed
Lighter-than-air
Inland
Manned
Random
Heavier-than-air
Oceanic
Unmanned
3Land
Systems that move goods and people from one place
to another on earth.
Random Routes cars, buses, motorcycles
Fixed Routes trains, elevators, pipelines
4Air
- Lifting passengers and/or cargo into the air in
order to move from place to place.
Lighter-than-air dirigibles, zeppelins, hot-air
balloons
Heavier-than-air airplanes, helicopters, jets
5Water
- The use of water to support the vessel in the
transport of people or goods.
Oceanic (oceans/bays) oil tankers, submarines,
merchant ships
Inland (lakes/rivers) canoes, flat bottom boats
6Space
- Systems that move people and goods outside the
earths atmosphere.
Manned space station, shuttle
Unmanned space probe, satellites

7Each transportation vehicle is made up of
subsystems. These subsystems are
- Propulsion Systems
- Suspension Systems
- Control Systems
- Guidance Systems
- Structural Systems
- Support Systems
8Vehicle Sub-Systems
- Propulsion Systems transportation systems must
have a force to propel it from a starting point
to its destination. - Suspension Systems Vehicular weight is supported
by the suspension systems. It supports the
weight of a vehicle as it moves down a pathway.

9Vehicle Sub-Systems
- Control systems control speed and direction of a
vehicles path. The moving of people or cargo
from one location to another requires control. - Guidance systems provide information concerning
the control of the vehicle. Guidance systems can
be simple or quite complex.

10Vehicle Sub-Systems
- Structural systems structural systems
accommodate a vehicles cargo and form the basic
framework of the vehicle. - Support systems are used to maintain vehicles
and other transportation technologies.
