• All computers, regardless of how big or small
  they are, have three things in common
• Data has to be input
• Data has to be processed by the computer
• Processed data has to be output

• How does the data get in and out of the computer?
• To get data in and out of a computer we need
  input and output devices
• What are input devices?
• Input means to enter data into a computer for
  processing
• An input device is connected to a computer and is
  any device that can get data into a computer

Process

• When the data is in the computer it must be
  processed.
• Inside the computer is a central processing unit
  (CPU). This is also known as a processor.
• This processes all the data, information and
  instructions input into the computer. It then
  produces an output using an output device

Processor Speeds

• The speed with which a CPU processes data is
  measures in either megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz
  (GHz).
• Each year, faster and faster processors (or
  chips) are being produced.
• Speeds of over 3 GHz are now common.
• To give you an idea of how fast chips work, 3
  gigahertz equals 3 000 000 000 cycles per second!
• This means the computer will make three thousand
  million calculations per second.
• Thats fast!

Output

• Output means the results of processing data
• To get processed information out of a computer
  you need an output device. An output device will
  display the processed data.
