Chart of Accounts
  • The Chart of Accounts is the numbering system
    used by Banner to capture financial transactions
    and facilitate retrieval of information and
    financial reporting. The Chart of Accounts is
    defined by the letter E.
  • The chart of accounts structure is composed of
    six elements Fund, Organization, Account,
    Program, Activity, and Location (FOAPAL).
  • Some of the FOAPAL elements represent information
    that is similar to the Ledgers, Account Numbers,
    and Object Code in the old FRS System.

Fund
Fund
  • A six-character code that identifies a
    self-balancing set of accounts and identifies
    ownership.
  • Similar to FRS GL Account.
  • Cash is a part of every Fund.
  • Examples of Funds in Banner
  • 111170 - State Funds (East Campus)
  • 141790 - Special Funds
  • 310900 - Auxiliary Funds
  • EA3976- Foundations

Organization
Organization
  • A six-character code that identifies a budgetary
    unit and/or department.
  • Similar to FRS SL account.
  • Houses information regarding revenues, expenses
    and budgets.
  • Examples of Organizations
  • 240901- AF Systems Coordination
  • 512108- AA Financial Aid
  • 630001- HS Nurse Administration

Account
Account
  • A five-character code that identifies objects
    (for example assets, liabilities, revenues,
    labor, expenditures, transfers).
  • This is similar to the FRS Object Code or line
    item.
  • Examples of Account Code
  • 50111 - Resident Tuition
  • 60200 - SPA Staff Salaries
  • 72181 - Education Supplies
  • 73211 - In-State Transportation Ground

Program
  • A four-character code that identifies a function
    and enables the institution to establish a method
    of classifying transactions.
  • The program code is similar to the purpose code
    in FRS.
  • Examples of Program Codes
  • 1010-Instruction
  • 1100-Research
  • 1510-Library
  • 1600-Student Services

Activity
Activity
  • An optional six-character code that is
    non-hierarchical and can be used to further
    define expenses (for example physicians, trade
    skills, etc.).
  • Activity codes are often used to account for
    tracking of special events or physician
    activities.

  • An optional six-character code that is
    non-hierarchical and can be used to further
    define a location.
  • Location codes are only used in the Fixed Assets
    Module.

Account Index
  • A six-character code used in Banner as a shortcut
    to the fund, organization or program code.
  • The index is entered into the system when
    recording transactions and performing queries.
    When the index is entered, the system retrieves
    the fund, organization and/or program codes that
    correspond to the index.
