6What is the goal of the Clubhouse?
- A clubhouse is committed to helping people with
mental illness stay out of hospitals while
achieving educational, financial and vocational
goals. - Responsibility of the operation of the clubhouse
lies with the member and staff, who are engaged
together in all aspects of the clubhouse
operation.
7Receptionist
Some members come for support and friendship in
the friendly surroundings and for the great lunch
provided by our kitchen crew!!
- The receptionist area is located in the front of
the clubhouse as you enter. - An average of 45 people sign in each day!!!
- Everyday members come to the clubhouse for
exciting activities projects that will prepare
them for work outside of Koolau Clubhouse.
8Dining Room
The Dining room is used daily for breakfast and
lunch.
The Kitchen unit uses the dining room for its
unit meetings. House meetings are also held in
the dining room area. Social rec. is sometimes
held in the dining room. Special events are
held in the Dining Room.

10Conference Room
The conference room is used for many different
functions those functions include the
following -Interviews -Education
Classes -Tutoring -Library -Special
Guests -Workshops -Confidential Meetings
11Snack Shop
The snack shop is another way that members can
participate as well as learn new skills. The
snack shop is always open during clubhouse hours,
except when we are having a meeting. Members can
enjoy coffee and a snack while socializing with
others.
We have a cash register that is more similar to
retail stores and the members who work in the
snack shop can learn the basics of professional
cash registers.
12Garden
The maintenance unit is in charge of the
garden. A group works at the garden daily. We
are growing many different plants at our garden
including these -Corn -Beans -Sweet
Potato -Bananas -Taro -Tomatoes -Egg
Plant -Carrots
Our garden is located at the Windward Community
Health Clinic and has been a great place for
members to learn gardening skills.

14Clerical Unit
The clerical unit helps members to learn various
tasks in a clerical setting so members can adapt
to a clerical setting at work or in their every
day lives. Some of the different tasks that are
done in the clerical unit include -Answering
telephones -Sending faxes -Sending and checking
Clubhouse Email -Calculating attendance and
statistics -Creating databases for member
info. -Creating pamphlets and flyers -Making
Xerox copies -Laminating documents and other
papers -Making the calendar of clubhouse events

- The Kitchen unit prepares all the meals at the
Clubhouse. - Kitchen unit tasks include the following

There are many different tasks in the kitchen
unit.
Everything is made from scratch.
18Maintenance Unit
The maintenance unit is very helpful for everyone
at the clubhouse. The maintenance unit helps
keep the clubhouse clean and safe. A few members
of the maintenance unit help keep up with the
garden daily. Members can now learn even more
tasks in the maintenance unit that will help them
find a job and better their lives.

21Membership
Membership is open to anyone with a history of
mental illness, unless that person poses a
significant or current threat to the general
safety of the clubhouse community.
There are currently 140 active members at the
Koolau Clubhouse.
22New member orientation
Members must complete a week of orientation
before becoming a member. We have orientation
the first and third week of every month. During
orientation, the new members learn the history
and standards of clubhouse. During orientation
each member can familiarize themselves with
clubhouse and choose where and with whom they
would like to work.
23Education
Education at our clubhouse is one of our main
focuses.
Information and applications for adult education
and GED classes are available for those members
interested in furthering their education. We
have tutoring available to all members upon
request.
24Employment
The clubhouse is focused on helping members learn
vocational skills as well as finding jobs that
suit their individual needs. There are 3
different types of employment that the clubhouse
develops. They are -Transitional
Employment -Supported Employment -Independent
Employment Last year, members with jobs made
more than 97,000.
25Advocacy
The clubhouse focuses on helping members become
advocates for themselves some of the things that
we do at clubhouse include testifying at the
legislature, presenting at community events, and
learning about the issues pertaining to mental
health.

27Finance
The money for the Friends of Koolau Clubhouse is
also tracked by the finance committee.
The finance committee helps the clubhouse keep
track of the money that we have and the daily
profit from the kitchen as well as the snack
shop. We have our finances tracked on
Quickbooks.
28The safety and health committee at the clubhouse
focuses on the many issues that involve the
health and safety of staff and members. Some of
the issues that the committee deals with
are -Fire Drills -Emergency Preparation -Power
failure procedures -Bomb threat procedures -First
Aid -CPR basics -Blood and air born diseases

29Dual Diagnosis Anonymous
The Clubhouse hosts a dual diagnosis anonymous
(DDA) meeting every Thursday evenings from 5 to
6. The meeting is held at the Windward Community
Health Center. The attendance at the DDA
meetings often is as high as 40.
30Social Recreation
The clubhouse has many different activities that
we all plan together. These activities are held
on Wednesdays, one Saturday a month, as well as
all holidays. These are Some of the activities
we enjoy -Going to the beach -Singing
karaoke -Sight-seeing trip to the north
shore -Going to the movies -Walking around
Pearlridge -Having game night here at the
clubhouse -BBQs here at the clubhouse
313 YEAR CERTIFICATION
We are currently a 3-year certified clubhouse.
This is the highest certification awarded within
the International Center for Clubhouse
Development (ICCD). We continue to strive to
improve upon our many accomplishments, and we are
very grateful for everyones help in maintaining
our great clubhouse.
