From initial discussions with Pia LaurilaDG
Research . key factors .
  • Projects need to address major economic, social
    and environmental challenges facing Europe
  • The research financed is problem-oriented and
policy relevant at the same time
  • Along with the highest scientific quality, policy
usefulness of the research results is central
  • Communication and dissemination issues are
    critical to plan

6
  • One lesson from the 1st SSH call was that
proposals had unclear links with previously
    funded research
  • Capitalisation on the previous research is an
    absolute necessity

7
And my experiences ..Key phrases that come to
mind? ..
  • Very competitive!
  • November 2007
  • 425 proposals received and 79 projects invited to
    negotiations (budget 42 MEUR)
  • 29 proposals evaluated and 3 projects selected
for funding DERREG, FRIDA and SHRINK SMART

8
Also
  • Preparation (project and internally)
  • Trust
  • Work! (and maybe little reward)
  • Compromise / flexibility
  • Clarity/ Realistic targets
  • Need for Professional help?
  • University Support
  • Administration
