WINDPOWERPASCAL ENGLISH SCHOOL
LIMASSOLENVIROMENT CHALLENGE
  • By Kyriakos Iakovou 2A

Why not?
  • Why dont we use wind power generators inside our
    gardens?
  • Instead we burn tons of oil daily to make
    electricity.
  • Not only this is bad for the environment but this
is also bad for our own health, because we breath
in the fumes coming from burned oil.
  • Todays technology has given us the opportunity
to take wind and change it to electricity by
    using a wind turbine.

3
Think about it
  • Wouldnt you like it if every morning you woke up
and saw the wind power generator and thought how
good this is for the environment we all live ?
  • Think about this after I the end of this slide
    show

4
Is it expensive?
  • In Cyprus people must think that a wind turbine
must cost a lot, but it doesnt really. A wind
turbine can cost from 2000 pounds to 5000pounds
depending on how much electricity a place needs.
A wind turbine for sure will cost less than
paying electricity in five years. And as you know
a wind turbine needs wind to make electricity and
    wind costs nothing.

5
How hard is oil to get ?
  • Fossil Fuel Energy - Oil
  • Oil is a thick, black, gooey liquid also called
petroleum. It's found way down in the ground,
usually between layers of rock. To get oil out, a
well is dug. Digging a well is like putting a
straw into a can of coke. The oil is then pumped
out of the ground, just like when you suck coke
    up the straw. Oil
  • Gas Pump
  • is carried in pipelines and large tanker ships. A
refinery changes the oil into products like
gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel. It's also
burned in factories and power plants to make
electricity. The oil is burned, which produces
gases that turn a turbine to create electricity.

6
The benefits of wind energy
  • It's clean. Wind power does not produce dangerous
waste, nor does it contribute to global warming.
    It's affordable.
  • The first offshore wind turbines in the UK are
producing power more cheaply than our newest
nuclear power station. The UK Government's
figures show that all wind power will be cheaper
    than nuclear power by 2020.
  • It works. Denmark already gets 20 of its
    electricity from wind power.

7
Not only but
  • It creates jobs. The wind industry could bring
thousands of new jobs to Cyprus, many of them
using offshore engineering skills used by the
declining oil and gas industry. If offshore wind
were developed to supply just 10 of the Cyprus
electricity, then 36,000 jobs could be created.
  • It's safe. Unlike nuclear power stations, wind
    turbines are unlikely terrorist targets.
