What is Dizzy?
  • it is a UNIX server
  • UNIX is an operating system
  • servers have high-speed connections to the
    Internet
  • servers run software to make Web pages available
    for browsers to access
  • our server, dizzy, houses all the UA Library
    homepages so they can be accessed by the Internet

Files
  • used to store the information that you usually
    work with such as an HTML document or an image
  • common file extensions .htm, .gif, .jpg, .au
  • you own files that you create and can set
    access permissions to control which other users
    can have access to them
  • files are contained within a directory

Directories
  • A file that holds other files and other
    directories
  • you can create directories in your home directory
    to hold files and other sub-directories
  • directories allow you to structure your
    information in a way that makes best sense to you

Pathnames
  • Every file and directory in the file system can
    be identified by a complete list of names of the
    directories that are on route from root
  • /usr5/webdir/library/teams/ust/homepage.htm
  • is the pathname for the UST home page

Logging On/Off(Windows 3.1 - use TELNET)
  • telnet dizzy.library.arizona.edu
  • the system will then ask for your login and
    password
  • login calvin
  • password (your password is never displayed on
    the screen as you type it in so others cant see
    it)
  • each user initially logs into their home
    directory
  • /usr11/users/mmorales
  • to logoff, at the prompt type
  • exit or logoff

(Windows 3.1 users)
  • To create/edit your personal web pages you need
    to change directories (cd) from your home
    directory by typing
  • cd www or cd teamname
  • to see what files are in the directory type
  • ls
  • to change into another directory within www or
    your hometeam directory type
  • cd directory name

  • To go up a directory type
  • cd ..
  • To edit an html page type
  • pico name.html
  • to save changes you have made in pico type
  • Ctrl-O
  • to exit pico type
  • Ctrl-X
  • to return to your home directory type

  • to FTP a file into your personal or hometeam
    directory, use the entire pathname
  • /usr5/webdir/library/teams/ust

Mapping the W Drive(Windows 95/NT users)
  • Go to File Manager
  • in the Disk pull down menu choose
  • Connect Network Drive
  • in the Drive window choose W
  • in the Path window type
  • \\dizzy\webdir
  • in the Connect As window type your dizzy login
    name
  • check the Reconnect at Logon box

  • Start your computer
  • enter your dizzy password when prompted
  • go to File Manager
  • click on the W Drive to see the list of
    directories in dizzy

  • Your personal home page is in the directory
    called users
  • to get to your team directory choose the library
    directory, then your team directory
  • you can save files directly to dizzy

Terminology
  • access permissionsa set of permissions
    associated with every file and directory that
    determine who can read it, write to it, or
    execute it. Only the owner of the file (or the
    super-user) can change these permissions.
  • home directory the directory you are placed in
    immediately after you login to the system.
  • root the directory located at the top of the
    Unix file system. It is represented by the "/"
    (forward slash) character.
  • pico an editor
  • file manager a tool you can use in Windows to
    organize your files and directories.
  • WWW document root the only part of the Dizzy
    directory structure that the WWW server can see
  • link allows other parts of the Dizzy directory
    structure to be available to Web browsers
