DNS
  • Definition
  • DNS stands for Domain Name Servers. The DNS
is the system by which all Internet service
addresses are created, maintained, and used.

4
What DNS does ?
  • Domain name servers, or DNS, are an incredibly
important but completely hidden part of the
    internet.
  • Domain name Servers translate domain names to IP
    addresses.

5
  • That sounds like a simple task, and it would be
    -- except for five things
  • There are billions of IP addresses.
  • There are many billions of DNS requests made
    every day.
  • Domain names and IP addresses change daily.
  • New domain names get created daily.
  • Millions of people work every day.

How does DNS work ?
8
Other functions of DNS
  • Hostnames and IP addresses do not necessarily
match on a one-to-one basis. Many hostnames may
correspond to a single IP address.
  • Mail transfer agents use DNS to find out where to
deliver e-mail for a particular address.
  • To provide resilience in the event of computer
failure, multiple DNS servers provide coverage of
    each domain.

9
Conclusion
  • DNS helps us find the hosts without we knowing
    their IP addresses.
  • They do this all this with out our knowledge.
