Early Life
  • 1801 Born in Ireland
  • 1820 Joined the 46th Regiment as an ensign
  • 1833 Became a lieutenant in the 62nd Regiment
    and served in India.
  • 1834 Resigned due to ill-health
  • Went to Sydney and became clerk to the Executive
    Council
  • 1835 Served as Colonial Secretary
  • 1837 Appointed Police Magistrate of Maitland and
    Muswellbrook

Community Service
  • 1838 Led a party of mounted police to arrest
    white men said to have killed at least 28
    aboriginals at or near Myall Creek on the
    Liverpool plains. Arrested eleven men who were
    tried and found guilty. Seven men were hanged.
  • Played a major part in the public life in
    Maitland, became a foundation member of the
    Australian Immigration Association and was
    elected chairman of the Maitland Branch.

Hero
  • 1840 When visiting Muswellbrook, he learned of a
    gang of bushrangers led by Edward (Teddy the
    Jewboy) Davis, who had terrorized settlers in the
    Scone district, raiding cattle stations and
    breaking homesteads. In one raid, John Graham,
    clerk in a store at Scone, was murdered. Captain
    Day organised a party of mounted men, pursued the
    bushrangers and arrested six men. They were all
    tried and found guilty and were hanged on the 16
    March 1841. Grateful residents of the Scone
    district presented Day with a service of plate
    for his efforts.

  • 1844 On 16 February, he laid the foundation
    stone of a new gaol at East Maitland.
  • 1846 As the Governors representative, he laid
    the foundation stone of a new hospital in
    Maitland.

Moved from Maitland
  • 1848 Days business ventures proved unsuccessful
    and his estate was confiscated until his
    creditors were satisfied.
  • 1849 Appointed to Sydney
  • 1851 Became provincial inspector of police for
    the Northern District.

Final Years
  • 1853 Appointed stipendiary magistrate at Port
    Macquarie
  • 1858 Appointed stipendiary magistrate at
    Maitland
  • 1869 Retired at Maitland
  • 1876 Died and was buried at Glebe Cemetery East
    Maitland.

  • Oldhome was built in 1837 in Wallis Street East
    Maitland.
  • It is the 4th house built on that site. The
    first, was built in 1818 to accommodate Governor
    Lachlan Macquarie on his second tour of the area.
  • The first private owner was Edward Denny Day, who
    died there in 1876.
