Indian and Chinese Empires
  • Mauryan and Gupta Empires and the Han Dynasty

3
Mauryan Empire
  • In 321 B.C. Chandragupta Maurya seized power from
his regional king, beginning the Mauryan Empire.
  • Chandragupta took on the neighbors to the
northwest of his kingdom, and by 303 B.C. the
Mauryan Empire stretched 2,000 miles, uniting
north India politically for the first time.

4
Asoka
  • In 269 B.C. Chandraguptas grandson Asoka assumed
    the throne.
  • He at first followed the tradition of expanding
the empire by waging war, but after 100,000
soldiers were slain in battles against the
southwest India, he had a change of heart.

5
Buddhism Comes to India
  • After the slaughter sustained to capture the
southwest, Asoka decided to rule by the Buddhist
    teachings of
  • Nonviolence
  • Peace to all beings

6
Spreading the Word
  • Asoka had huge stone pillars erected throughout
the kingdom stating the new policies.
  • Some of these policies were
  • Treating all subjects fairly and humanely
  • Using non-violent tactics to solve disputes
  • Religious toleration accepting people with
religious beliefs different than your own.

7
Spreading the Word Continued
  • So he could visit all corners of the empire,
Asoka had an extensive system of roads built.
  • He created resting places and wells along the
roads to aide travelers on their journeys.
  • He even created watering places for animals to
demonstrate his concern for his subjects.

8
The Empire Falls
  • After Asokas death in 232 B.C. (37 years) the
    empire began to fall apart.
  • It seems that there were very few rulers who were
willing to follow Asokas example and continue
the Empire down the road of Buddhist non-violence.

10
Coming to Power
  • Chandra Gupta came to power by marrying the
daughter of an old, influential royal family.
  • Chandras son, Samudra, inherited the throne from
his father. He expanded the empire with 40 years
    of wars and conquest.

11
The Golden Son
  • Chandra Gupta II was the 3rd ruler in the Gupta
    line.
  • He strengthened the empire through peaceful means
by negotiating diplomatic and marriage alliances.
  • During the reign of the first 3 Guptas, India
experienced a period of great achievement in art,
    literature, religious thought, science, and
    mathematics.

12
The Han Emperors of China
  • The Han Dynasty came to power in 202 B.C. and
lasted for more than 400 years (although there
was a period in the middle of their rule when
they were taken over by another dynasty).
  • The Han expanded Chinas borders and developed a
system of government that lasted for centuries.

13
What they did
  • The Han Emperors centralized the Chinese
government, which was a bureaucratic system
  • Meaning that it was those who were the best
educated and most qualified who received the
    jobs.
  • One Han Emperor, Wudi, required those who worked
for him to pass a Confucianism test- he believed
the religion contained all of the qualities a
    government official should have.

14
Assimilation
  • When the Chinese conquered the peoples who made
up their vast empire, they forced the people to
assimilate, or take on the Chinese culture at the
    expense of their own.
  • This would create tensions in later years.
