The irrigation and diversion from the lower
yellow river is lifeblood for this areas economy
development.
Until 1990, about 4 billion(t) of sediment were
diverted in the irrigation area.
Water diversion from the Lower Yellow River
carrying famous high concentration of sediment,
inevitably diverted much more sediment.

Siltation has been a restricted factor in water
resources distribution and environment protection
in wide area along the river
The purpose of our research is promoting the
beneficial water resources and abolishing the
harmful redundant sediment.

Embankment Strengthening by Deposition Inside and
Outside of the Embankments
the Yellow River is a famous aggrading river
Formed Gullies along the embankments. Threat the
safety of the embankments
Ascended the level of underground water. Give
birth to the swamps and make the soil salinized
Raise the ground surface, and strengthen the foot
of the embankments by desilting outside
Widen and consolidate the embankments by
desilting inside

Proper operation modes concentrating large
discharge in short time of water diversion
combining diversion with storage diverting water
avoiding peak sediment concentration avoiding
backwater in canals carefully maintaining canals
etc.
Engineering measures increasing longitudinal
slope of irrigation canals lining canals
adopting deep-narrow cross sections reducing
head losses of crossing structures drawing water
from surface layer by use of rubber dam etc.

Diverting water from the Lower Yellow River plays
an important role in this area. The new
situation of the water resource of the Yellow
River decreased and the sediment deposition
redundant, the proper management to resolve for
the wide irrigation area development should be
found. The long distance transport of sediment
is the proper way. It should be a complexion of
sediment utilization, sediment treatment and
sediment transportation. Summarizing and
upgrading such experience is much significant for
the sustainable development of water diversion
from the Yellow River.
