Background of Pearl Harbor

• Located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii
• A large Naval Base
• A target for enemies because it is the center of
  our forces

The Attack on Pearl Harbor

• Japan desired to expand their empire
• Submarines were first sent to spy before attack
• Out of 3 waves of planes to be sent, only 2 were
  sent
• First wave sent at 753 am, the second wave sent
  at 855 am
• 181 planes were in each wave

• The main targets were battleship row and
  hangers
• Battleships were primary targets
• 8 battleships were destroyed
• 2,403 soldiers were killed
• Only 29 Japanese planes were shot down out of 362

After the Attack

• The nation was in a state of shock
• Hospitals were full of patients
• The hospitals needed more supplies and more staff
• President Roosevelt declared war on Japan
