1 Corinthians 618 (New King James Version) 18
Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does
is outside the body, but he who commits sexual
immorality sins against his own body.

One Of Our Learning Objectives
As we continue our study of the great sermon on
the mount, it is important to consider the
audience of the sermon. Jesus is preaching,
primarily, to an audience of Jews. These Jews
would have been struggling with the transition to
a new law (New Testament) given what they had
known for generations (the Law of Moses). Jesus
obviously understood this and pauses to enlighten
his listeners as to His personal relationship to
the Law.
To be able to recall, from memory, the key
components of the book of Matthew
Jesus begins by correcting two false impression
some may have had about His relationship with the
Law of Moses and the Prophets That He had come
to destroy the Law and the Prophets That His
teachings are contradictory to the Law and the
Prophets.

Jer. 3131-34  31"Behold, days are coming,"
declares the LORD, "when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and with the
house of Judah,  32not like the covenant which I
made with their fathers in the day I took them by
the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt,
My covenant which they broke, although I was a
husband to them," declares the LORD.  33"But
this is the covenant which I will make with the
house of Israel after those days," declares the
LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their
heart I will write it and I will be their God,
and they shall be My people.  34"They will not
teach again, each man his neighbor and each man
his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they
will all know Me, from the least of them to the
greatest of them," declares the LORD, "for I will
forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will
remember no more."

Heb 86-13  6But now He has obtained a more
excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the
mediator of a better covenant, which has been
enacted on better promises. 7For if that first
covenant had been faultless, there would have
been no occasion sought for a second.  8For
finding fault with them, He says,     "BEHOLD,
DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD,         WHEN I
WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT         WITH THE
HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH
9NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH
THEIR FATHERS         ON THE DAY WHEN I TOOK
THEM BY THE HAND         TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE
LAND OF EGYPT         FOR THEY DID NOT CONTINUE
IN MY COVENANT,         AND I DID NOT CARE FOR
THEM, SAYS THE LORD.     10"FOR THIS IS THE
COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF
ISRAEL         AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE
LORD         I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR
MINDS,         AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR
HEARTS.         AND I WILL BE THEIR
GOD,         AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.
11"AND THEY SHALL NOT TEACH EVERYONE HIS
FELLOW CITIZEN,         AND EVERYONE HIS
BROTHER, SAYING, 'KNOW THE LORD,'         FOR
ALL WILL KNOW ME,         FROM THE LEAST TO THE
GREATEST OF THEM.     12"FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL
TO THEIR INIQUITIES,         AND I WILL REMEMBER
THEIR SINS NO MORE." 13When He said, "A new
covenant," He has made the first obsolete But
whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is
ready to disappear.

A. THEY WERE KNOWN TO "SAY AND DO NOT" - Mt
231-4 1. Though they often taught the
truth, they did not often practice what
they preached! 2. From them many parents
got the saying "Do as I say, not as I do" B.
THEY WERE KNOWN TO DO THINGS TO BE SEEN OF MEN -
Mt 235-7 1. They enjoyed wearing religious
garments that separated them from others, and
delighted in places and titles of honor 2.
Does this sound like any religious leaders
today? C. THEY WERE KNOWN TO NEGLECT PARTS OF
GOD'S LAW - Mt 2323-24 1. In their case,
they would emphasize the "lighter" matters of the
law, while neglecting the "weightier" commands
2. Or as we would say today, they "majored in
minors and minored in majors" D. THEY WERE
KNOWN TO BE LOVERS OF MONEY - Lk
1613-15 1. "Mammon" was their god, though
they would be quick to deny it and try to justify
themselves before men 2. Does this sound
like any "prosperity preachers" today?
Matthew 520"For I say to you that unless your
righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and
Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of
heaven.

Anger Management A Biblical Perspective
  • Remember the context
  • Jesus has admonished his listeners to have a
righteousness, that exceeds the righteousness of
    the scribes and Pharisees
  • He is contrasting what they have known for
generations with his new teaching and covenant
  • He uses something that they already know from the
old Law, to teach them about the contrast with
    the New law (covenant)

You shall not commit murder The 6th commandment
10
Turn around to the person behind you (or closet
to behind you) and see what scripture that you
can find that best describes Gods feelings about
murder.
Teachers Answer
Genesis 96 Whoever sheds mans blood, By
man his blood shall be shed   For in the image
of God   He made man.
