  • TARDEC works with 1,100 associates to develop and
maintain vehicles for all U.S. Armed Forces, many
    federal agencies, and numerous countries

14
CRADA Cooperative Research Development
Agreement
  • The CRADA was established as part of the
    Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act of
1986 and 1989 to enable federal laboratories to
conduct RD with private businesses and other
    entities
  • Designed to facilitate technology transfer
between parties and move individual ideas from
federal labs into the private sector

15
CRADA Cooperative Research
Development Agreement
  • A written contract between one or more private
companies and a government agency or laboratory
to collaborate on mutually beneficial research
  • Typically can be established within 60 days of
    initiation
  • CRADA partners share technical expertise and the
    intellectual property resulting from their
collaboration, as well as disclosure agreements,
    costs, results and contributions

16
CRADA How it Works
  • The federal government partner provides
    personnel, services, facilities, equipment or
other resources for the project, with or without
    reimbursement
  • The non-government partner provides funds,
    personnel, services, facilities, equipment or
other resources toward RD that are consistent
with the mission of the federal lab
  • Funds cannot be transferred from government
    partner to non-government partner
  • All parties to the CRADA can keep research
results confidential and free from disclosure for
    up to five years
  • Partners can share patents and patent licenses or
one partner can retain exclusive rights to a
    patent or patent license

17
CRADA Mutual Benefits
  • Provides industry with access to technical
    information, expertise, specialized equipment and
    new technology
  • Companies can use CRADAs as a tool to better
respond to market pressure, tighter company
budgets and globalization of competition. By
using CRADAs to access commercial expertise,
technologies and resources, government labs can
improve lab quality and image, enhance mission
capabilities and contribute to national economic
well-being by providing public access to
    technology.

18
CRADA Advantages
By facilitating teamwork and shared RD efforts,
CRADAs can be used by industrial and government
partners to
  • Solve technological and industrial problems
  • Share risks in developing technologies
  • Share knowledge
  • Exchange information
  • Share facilities
  • Exchange personnel
  • Provide technical assistance
  • Speed commercialization of federally developed
    technology
  • Develop new or improved products and processes

    technologies that benefit all sectors
  • NAC provides access to project seed funds to the
Automation Alley Technology Center for technology
commercialization in the dual-use and homeland
