  • Making energy visible in homes and in businesses
  • Creating energy displays, energy information
    systems and web services
  • Cant manage what you cant see
  • Core behaviour change
  • 2-30 savings achieved

4
  • Domestic Energy Consumption

4
  • Is it important?
  • 45 of UKs carbon emissions derived from energy
    in buildings
  • 27 of UKs carbon emissions are from homes
  • Improvements
  • Building standards are much better 2006 80
    better than 1970
  • Home improvements
  • Condensing boilers
  • Efficiency of products (energy ratings)
  • So why are emissions not falling?
  • Electrical appliances are increasing
  • Occupancy rates falling

Most people are resistant to new things you
cant just throw technology at them and expect
them to adopt it.We have deliberately tried to
design desirability into our products based on
tested behavioral change principles. Our aim is
to- capture peoples interest- engage and hold
their attention - encourage them to work with
the system and to keep reducing their CO2
emissions. They are not meant to be meters...

  • AIM NUMBER 1 Behaviour change study
  • What impact do these displays have?
  • What factors contribute to significant savings?
  • What are the barriers to changing behaviour?
  • Is more information helpful or confusing?
  • Unintended consequences?
  • Resulting carbon reduction

19
  • Carbon Connections Project

19
  • AIM NUMBER 2 What does the data tell us?
  • What can we learn from household profiles?
  • What households achieve most and why?
  • What can we glean from appliance level energy
    data?
  • Can we devise smarter technological ways of
    achieving savings?

20
  • Methodology

20
  • 70 households monitored with no display
  • 70 households with simple level display
  • 70 households with more sophisticated display
    and more information
  • Data streamed back via web continuously
  • 7 month analysis duration
  • Qualitative analysis before, throughout and at
    end

21
  • Other Factors

21
  • Contributing to costs
  • Contact data bases
  • Working relationships
  • Independence for results
  • Future potential

22
  • Conclusions
