Introduction

• This PowerPoint will tell you all you need to
  know about space.
• For thousands of years people have
• dreamed of searching the skies and
• now the opportunity has come.

About Earth

• People used to think that the Earth was flat
  just because it looks flat. But actually its
  spherical. There are 365 days in a year or 366
  days in a Leap year. If Earth is tilting forward
  it would be Summer and if it is tilting backwards
  it would be winter. A day is when the Earth spins
  round once on its axis, this takes 24 hours.

Solar System

• In the Solar System there are eight planets
  called Saturn, Neptune, Mercury, Jupiter, Earth,
  Mars, Uranus and Venus. The hottest planet is
  Mercury, and the smallest. Mars used to have
  water millions of years ago but it has now gone.
  However it still has its 2 moons. People are
  starting to think Pluto is not a planet but its
  a stray moon. The outer planets are Neptune,
  Uranus, Saturn and Jupiter. Saturn is 120,536 km
  in size but Jupiter is the biggest. Did you know
  that you can fit all of the planets inside
  Jupiter and there will still be room left over!

The Galaxy

• The Galaxy has 200 billion stars in the Milky
  Way.
• Our solar system is situated on an arm of the
  milky way.
• The Milky Way is a giant whirl pool.

Moon landings and travel

• There have been 29 people on the moon including
  Neil Armstrong.
• 12 people have been on the moon at a time.
• 27 astronauts have flown past the moon.
• The last moon landing was in 1973.

The Moon Phases

• You can get 6 types of moons and they are called
  waxing and waning gibbous, full moon, new moon
  and waxing and waning crescents.

Space Race

• The space race lasted for 15 years.
• The Russians and the U.S.As had a race against
  each other to achieve success in space.
• A dog named Laika went to space in Sputnic 2.
• Yuri Gagarin became the first human into space.
