What is Alta-Systems Maths?

• Alta Maths for Schools is a complete, web-based,
  formative assessment system. It is designed for
  primary and post primary schools, with content
  specifically designed for the Northern Ireland,
  Scotland and England curricula. It supports
  students in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 (aged 5 to 14 )
  . Levels A-F

Project aims

• To identify teachers/pupils in the ASGs who will
  use the Alta System
• To release staff to be familiarised with the
  system
• To enable staff to meet regularly to discuss
  issues/advantages of the system

• To evaluate , at the end of the project what the
  impact has been of using the Alta system
• To consider whether to continue with the system
  and whether to roll it out to other schools in
  the authority.

Project details

• This project is focussing on pupils ongoing
  formative assessment in maths.
• Alta-Systems is accessed by pupils themselves.
  They can do practice and adaptive questions at
  their own level and on any specific criteria.
• Pupils can also do a Confirm level test in any of
  the 4 strands

Project weaknesses

• Timing of training for staff
• Allowance should be built in for more in-house
  training alongside pupils
• Log on problems
• System crashing on particular questions
• Access to computers for whole classes

Evaluation

• Questionnaires were issued to all pupils involved
  in the pilot- here are some of their comments
• ALTA is a lot more fun than sitting with paper
  and a pencil at a desk
• I dont like the timed questions because I dont
  have enough time to answer
• Yes because I like working on the computer and
  you get your results quicker
• It is, because it is fun and makes people learn
  in a fun and quick way
