What are Adverbs?
  • Adverbs are words that modify verb, adjectives,
    and other adverbs.
  • They answer 4 questions
  • How?
  • When?
  • Where?
  • To what extent? (how much?)

How?
  • An adverb that tells how usually modifies a
    verb or verb phrase.
  • EX The football players yelled
  • loudly.
  • (loudly tells how the football players yelled)

Where?
  • An adverb that tells where usually modifies a
    verb or verb phrase.
  • EX I am going home in an hour.
  • (home tells where he went.)

NOTE
  • Some words can either be a preposition or an
    adverb.
  • If there is no noun following the word, it is an
    adverb. If there is a noun, it is a preposition.

Examples
  • Dad fell down.
  • down is an adverb there is no noun following.
  • Dad fell down the stairs.
  • down is a preposition it is followed by a
    noun.

When?
  • An adverb that tells when modifies a verb or
    verb phrase.
  • EX You may go later.
  • (later tells when you may go)

To what extent?
  • An adverb that tells to what extent usually
    modifies an adjective or another adverb.
  • EX The rug is extremely dirty.
  • (extremely tells to what extent the rug was
    dirty)

NOTE
  • You will need to memorize and learn the following
    list of adverbs!
  • not quite somewhat
  • so rather very
  • too
  • Other adverbs that tell to what extent usually
    end in -ly

  • Whenever these words appear in a prepositional
    phrase, they are not considered adverbs!!!

Steps to follow when looking for adverbs . . .
  • Identify the subject and the verb.
  • Label all nouns (these describe adjectives!)
  • Cross out all prepositional phrases.
  • Look at the words left. IF they answer the
    questions, you have an adverb.
