Title: Kinds of Dependent Clauses

1
Kinds of Dependent Clauses
  • Take out a piece of notebook paper. Head it as
classwork. While I go over your transition
sentences you will follow along with this slide
show. It will change automatically every 3
    minutes so dont waste time.

2
What is a clause?
  • A group of words with a subject and predicate
that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence.

3
What are the types of Dependent Clauses?
  • Noun clauses
  • Adjective clauses
  • Adverb clauses

4
What is a noun?
  • A person, place, thing, or idea.
  • Example Mary is wearing a green sweater. (Mary
    sweater are both nouns)

5
What is adjective?
  • A word that describes a noun.
  • Ex Mary is wearing a green sweater.
  • (Green is the adjective because it describes the
    sweater.)

6
What is an adverb?
  • It is a word that modifies or describes a verb,
adverb, or adjective. It tells how something is
being done and/or to what extent.
  • Example
  • She sings softly as the baby sleeps. (Softly is
my adverb because it modifies or describes the
verb sings and it tells you how she is singing.)

7
What is a noun clause?
  • A group of words with a subject and predicate
    that acts as a noun.
  • Example What the dictionary gives is the correct
    definition.
  • Hint if you can substitute someone or something
for the clause it is probably a noun clause.

8
What is an adjective clause?
  • A group of words with a subject and predicate
    that describes a noun.
  • Example The boy, who ran in the classroom, is
    currently serving ISS.
  • (who ran in the classroom is the adjective clause
    because it describes the boy)

9
What is an adverb clause?
  • A group of words with a subject and predicate the
modifies or describes a verb, adjective, or
    adverb.
  • Example When she began crying, I called the
counselor. (When she began crying is the adverb
clause because it describes the verb by telling
    the reader when she called.)
