2
What is the GIA?
  • The GIA is a scheme that provides funding for
travel costs associated with research activities,
such as attending conferences, field work trips,
    visiting international academics etc.
  • There are two types Overseas Study Grant and
    Conference Grant.
  • GIA funds are intended to cover partial costs of
    an economy return airfare.
  • Faculty/School/Institute will also contribute
towards the costs of travel, sustenance,
    accommodation, conference registration etc.

3
Conference Grant-in-Aid
  • Grants can only be made to a research higher
degree student who is presenting a paper at an
    interstate or overseas conference.
  • The applicant must be the principal author of the
    paper being presented.
  • The paper being presented should be original,
ongoing research, which is largely the
applicant's own work, and is directly related to
    the applicant's thesis topic.

4
Overseas Study Grant-in-Aid
  • The overseas research study or field work should
    enhance the students research thesis.
  • Applicants should also demonstrate how the
proposed period of fieldwork or research overseas
will become an integral and essential component
of the overall research program and how this will
be reflected in the thesis submitted for
    examination.

5
Who can apply?
  • To be eligible, applicants must
  • Be enrolled in a research higher degree
  • Have confirmed candidature (if relevant) PRIOR TO
    TRAVELLING and,
  • Be receiving substantial funding support from the
relevant academic area. QUT staff are only
eligible for funding support under the GIA, if no
    other University/Faculty funding is available.
  • Not have received a GIA for the same calendar
    year.

6
Who can apply?
  • Priority will be given to those who have not
received a grant from either of the Grants-in-Aid
    schemes in the past.
  • Applicants should have reached a stage in their
studies where they may obtain the best advantage
from the opportunity provided by the grant.
  • It is envisaged that the priority will be given
to those who are midway through their candidature
rather than near the beginning or the end. But
    this may vary between faculties.

7
What can the funds be used for?
  • Research-related activities only not for
    holidays!
  • If the student is absent for a single period,
    including weekends, which encompasses business
and private purposes and travel costs are
incurred by the University, the student will
normally pay 50 of the travel costs (normally
50 of airfares charged to QUT) when absence for
private purposes is 50 or more of the total
    period of absence.
