Title: Teen Pregnancy

1
Teen Pregnancy
Are You prepared for the Consequences?
2
How many teen girls get pregnant each year?
  • Nearly 1,000,000 teen girls get pregnant each
    year.
  • Nearly 4 out of 10 young women get pregnant at
least once before they turn 20.
  • Each year the Federal Government (taxpayers)
alone spend about 40 billion to help families
that began with a teenage birth.

3
You cant get pregnant the first time, right?
  • Wrong. Teen girls can get pregnant the first time
they have sex, and every time after that. A
couple that does not use birth control has an 85
percent chance of pregnancy within one year.

4
Do most teens choose to raise the child and get
married when they find out theyre pregnant?
  • In 1960, only 15 of teen births were to
unmarried teens. In 2000, 79 of teen births were
    to unmarried teens.

5
Who are the fathers, and where are they now?
  • Nearly 40 of the fathers of children born to
teen mothers are age 20 or older. Only 20 of the
fathers marry the teen mothers of their first
children. On average, the remaining 80 pay less
than 800 annually for child support.

6
Do the teen girls who get pregnant keep their
babies?
  • Just over one-half of all pregnancies to teens
aged 19 or younger end in births. Thirty percent
of teen pregnancies end in abortion and 14 end
    in miscarriage.

7
Some things to think about
  • Just because you think everyone is doing it,
    does not mean they are.
  • You are in charge of your own life. Dont let
anyone pressure you into having sex.
  • Sex wont make him yours, and a baby wont make
    him stay.
  • Not ready to be someones father? Its simple
Use protection every time or dont have sex.
  • Thinking it wont happen to me is stupid.

8
Can you get pregnant if you use birth control?
  • Yes. Even if used perfectly, all methods of birth
control have a failure rate, ranging from .05
for Norplant to 9 for the sponge and calendar
rhythm. The only way to make 100 sure that you
wont get pregnant or get someone pregnant is to
    not have sex.

9
Facts on Abstinence
  • NOT everybody is doing it.
  • Most teens who have had sex wish they would have
    waited.
  • Teens say they should be given a strong
    abstinence message.
  • Teens do not think it is embarrassing to say they
    are virgins.
  • Teen males approval of premarital sex is
    declining.
  • College freshmen are less likely to approve of
    casual sex.

10
1. True or False Most high school students are
having sex.
11
False
  • It is estimated now that almost 50 of teens are
    engaging in sex.

Lesson Plan Subject This can be used from 8th to
12th grade. Unit Any current events or sociology
class. General goal The goal will be to inform
the students of the consequences of having sex.
The students will make their own decisions
however, this will reinforce those who do not
want to have sex. We should also be stressing the
importance of abstinence. Concepts 1. The
students will be familiar with statistics 2.
They will be familiar with the terms abstinence,
abortion, child support, and safe sex. 3. An
understanding that they will have to live with
their decisions forever (Responsibility). Specific
Objectives 1. Make them aware of how dangerous
teen sex is. 2. Make them aware that it can
change your entire life. 3. Stress the
importance of abstinence. 4. Have them thinking
about the statistics and how the consequences
will immediately affect them. Activities Have
each student write a one page paper on how the
lesson might effect their lives. Is there
something that surprised you? Is there anything
about the lesson you do not agree with? Lastly,
would you be interested in joining a group of
your peers in an abstinence group? Evaluation Th
e paper will be graded on grammar and how much
effort the student put forth. There will be more
importance stressed in the message, rather than
the grade.
