- Sumba is twice the size of Bali
- Has a population of 500,000 people
- The population is 95 Christian
- The economy is based on subsistence farming
- Sumba is financially and politically forgotten by
Indonesia

- Sumba has the highest occurrences of malaria
outside the African continent - All 4 species of human malaria are abundant
- Malaria affects all of the population but in
particular the rural populations - Malaria is on the increase due to drug resistance
and lack of general health care

- 70 of child mortality (deaths) was caused by
malaria - 25 of all mothers had lost at least 1 child to
malaria (in some villages 45 ) - 62 of the children below age 5 had malaria
- 30 of the total population had malaria
- All four species of malaria parasites were
present in the project area - Drug resistance to Chloroquine was very high
(gt80)

Components
- Make high quality malaria diagnosis freely
available - provide the most effective malaria treatment for
all malaria species - Conduct mass screening of the target population
to wipe out malaria - Reduce malaria transmission by providing high
quality impregnated mosquito nets
