• European powers were in a race to claim African
  territory
• The colonial powers (European powers) used
  national flags to claim land
• The colonial powers claimed colonies without
  knowing exactly how it would benefit them
• Territories were unknown and few colonies
  benefited from colonial powers that controlled
  them
• Britain had a head start in acquiring lands, and
  the other colonial powers resented this unfair
  privilege and scrambled to try and catch up
• At the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885, the
  European powers divided African territory
  amongst themselves and agreed on a colonial map
  of Africa
