Title: Publishing Your Web Page

Publishing Your Web Page
  • To set up your web page on the WWW you must
transfer it as a file to the UEL main computer so
anyone is then free to access it.
  • This process is done using FTP (File Transfer
    Protocol).
  • Before you can do this you must have obtained
permission from the university and have your
login ID and the special password they provided.

2
Finding FTP
  • You must first make sure that the file containing
the web page that you want to be seen when your
URL is accessed is named info.html (if not then
rename it). This page will be the one that
everyone sees first and should contain links.
  • Go to UNIVERSITY MENU, then INTERNET AND E-MAIL,
    then FTP.

3
Logging in to FTP
  • Fill in the boxes, as follows
  • Host Name xena
  • Host Type automatic detect
  • User ID your usual login ID
  • Password the one you were given to use for
    your web page.
  • Then click OK.

The FTP Window
  • You should now have 2 boxes open
  • LOCAL refers to your own computer and all your
directories and files should be listed. You
should find your info.html file so that you can
see it listed in the LOCAL box. Different
directories can be opened by double clicking.
  • REMOTE refers to the UEL computer and a directory
    named www_page should be there.

5
Transferring Files
  • Now highlight both your info.html file and your
www_page directory by clicking once on each one.
  • Make sure you are still connected and then
transfer your info.html file from LOCAL to REMOTE
by clicking on the arrow pointing from the LOCAL
    to the REMOTE boxes.

6
Checking Your Web Page
  • Your info.html file should now appear in the
    remote box.
  • You should likewise transfer all files which are
linked to your main web page.
