degree in Supervision and Management in August
2009.
In this presentation, you will learn the skills
you need to advise students on courses they need
to take to prepare for the BAS degree, and learn
more about the BAS degree in general.
5Overview of the BAS Degree
- A Bachelor of Applied Science degree is a 120
credit hour state approved baccalaureate degree
program.
PBCCs BAS program is entitled Supervision and
Management and has three concentration
areas Business AdministrationHealth
AdministrationPublic Safety Administration
6Overview of the BAS Degree
- The BAS degree meets all requirements for a
Bachelors degree in the state of Florida.
Admission to graduate school is not guaranteed
for any baccalaureate degree in Florida. All
graduate programs are limited access and have
admission requirements based on a number of
factors.
7Lesson 1
- The BAS Curriculum
- Degree Structure and Content
8The BAS Degree
- Starting a baccalaureate degree program at PBCC
provides a career pathway for our students. Our
BAS program will be both accessible and
affordable. - We'll begin by showing you how the degree is
structured in a series of building blocks from
the students existing AA/AS/AAS degree.
Why did PBCC start the BAS degree and how is the
degree structured?
9Associate Degree to BAS
- In Florida, most AS/AAS degrees did not have
guaranteed articulation to a baccalaureate
program. This left these students with few
affordable options to complete a bachelors
degree.
AS/AAS/AA
BAS
AS/AAS degree to BAS
The primary purpose of the community college
baccalaureate degree is to provide AS/AAS
students with the opportunity to complete a
bachelors degree. The degree is also open to AA
students.
10The Structure of the BAS degree
General Education
- The BAS degree is 120 credits 36 general
education credits, 42 credits from the students
core courses in the Associate degree, and 42
hours of upper division courses.
AS/AAS/AA Courses
All BAS students must complete the same general
education requirements as the Associate in Arts
degree.
Upper DivisionCourses
AS/AAS/AA degree to BAS
11The BAS Concentration Areas
BusinessAdministration
- The BAS degree has three tracks from which
students can choose. Students in all three tracks
share 21 hours of foundation courses.
Health Administration
The remaining 21 hours are specialty courses
which help the student gain expertise in their
concentration area.
Public Safety Administration
The Three ConcentrationAreas
12BAS Admission Requirements
The student must Possess an AS, AAS or AA degree
with a minimum of 60 credit hours, which includes
15 hours of transferable general education. Have
a 2.0 grade point average. Students without an
Associates degree must have earned at least 60
hours and may apply for provisional admission.
BAS Degree Admission Requirements

foreign language requirement (one year of college
or two years of high school).
BAS Degree Completion Requirements
18Lets Review!
The BAS degree is primarily designed for AS/AAS
students.The degree has three concentration
areas Business, Health and Public Safety. The
degree is 120 hours in length.
The BAS Degree
The degree has 36 hours of general education, 42
hours from the AS/AAS/AA degree, and 42 hours of
upper division courses.

degree concentration areas?
- Business Administration
- Early Childhood Education
- Health Administration
20Test 1, question 1 Answer
- Early Childhood Education is not one of the three
concentration areas of Business Administration,
Health Administration and Public Safety
Administration.
21Test 1, question 2
- Students in the BAS degree need only complete 100
credits (Pick one answer.)
22Test 1, question 2 Answer
All bachelors degree in Florida have a minimum
of 120 credits.
23Test 1, question 3
- Students in the BAS program must complete the
same general education requirements as AA
students. (Pick one answer.)
24Test 1, question 3 Answer
All BAS students are required to complete the
same general education requirements as AA
students.
25Test 1, question 4
- Students in the BAS program are exempt from CLAST
like AS degree students. (Pick one answer.)
26Test 1, question 4 Answer
All BAS students must meet the same CLAST
requirements as AA degree students.
27Lesson 2
- Advising the AS/AAS Student
28Advising the AS/AAS Student
- Advising the AS/AAS degree student typically
involves seeing what courses the student can take
before the BAS program begins in 2009. - This typically involves running a degree audit
for the student using program objective 1-000.
What is the best strategy for advising the AS/AAS
student?
29Advising the AS/AAS Student
- The results of the degree audit will yield the
courses that the student still needs to complete
in general education. - Because the BAS degree does not have any common
prerequisite courses, students should be advised
to take general education courses that best meet
their educational skills.
What courses should AS/AAS students take?
30Advising the AS/AAS Student
- Another important part of advising the AS/AAS
student is the selection of a concentration area.
- A crosswalk of suggested BAS concentration
areas to PBCCs existing AS/AAS degree programs
is available for download from
www.pbcc.edu/basinfo.xml
How will I know what BAS concentration area to
recommend to the student?
31Advising the AS/AAS Student
- The last step is to advise the student on an
educational plan for taking the remaining general
education courses. - Remember that if the student took MAT 1033 as
part of their AAS degree, they will need to
complete two additional college-level math
courses.
In what order should students take general
education courses?
32Advising the AS/AAS Student
- AS/AAS students can take general education
courses along with their 3000/4000 level courses.
- AS/AAS students will also need to complete the
foreign language requirement for the BAS degree
one year of college-level instruction or two
years of high school level instruction.
Must AS/AAS students finish general education
before admission to the BAS?
33Lets Review!
Advisors should run a degree audit to see what
general education courses the student needs to
take. Advisors should also help in selecting a
concentration area.
Advisors should help students with an educational
plan. All general education courses must be
transferable, so a class like MAT 1033 will not
count as general education for the BAS.
Advising an AAS/AS degree student
34Test 2, question 1
- Students must take the same common prerequisite
courses as Business majors. (Pick one answer.)
35Test 2, question 1 Answer
The BAS degree in Supervision and Management does
not have any common prerequisite courses.
36Test 2, question 2
- AS/AAS students MUST have completed General
Education for program admission (Pick one answer.)
37Test 2, question 2 Answer
AS/AAS students can take general education
courses along with their 3000/4000 level courses.
38Test 2, question 3
- Which of the following courses would NOT be
acceptable as general education for the BAS
student? (Pick one answer.)
- ENC 1101.
- MGF 1106.
- MAT 1033.
39Test 2, question 3 Answer
MAT 1033 is an elective course and not useable
for general education in AS/AS or BAS degrees.
40Lesson 3
- Advising the AA degree Student
41Advising the AA Student
- Advising the AA student requires different
strategies than advising the AS/AAS student. - Because AA students have general education
requirements satisfied, they are required to take
a portion of an AS/AAS degree to meet BAS degree
requirements.
What is the best strategy for advising the AA
student?
42Advising the AA Student
- The advisor should help the AA student choose a
concentration area in the BAS degree. Most will
probably want the Business Administration track. - Once the AA student knows which concentration
area they would like to pursue, they would choose
an AS/AAS degree in which they would take 18
hours of core classes.
What concentration area should AA students choose?
43Advising the AA Student
- Many are confused as to why AA students need to
take additional courses, since they have 60
hours. - Remember that the AS/AAS degree must complete
general education, (typically 18 additional
hours) to supplement their 18 hours of general
education and 42 hours of AS/AAS core courses
they earned in their AS/AAS degree.
Why do AA students have to take AS degree courses?
44Advising the AA Student
- Since AA students have general education
satisfied, their additional 18 hours are in
AS/AAS courses. - AA students can take these classes before they
start the BAS program or during the BAS program.
Do AA students have to take the AS/AAS courses
before they start the BAS program?
45Advising the AA Student
- Once the AA student selects a concentration area,
you can develop an educational plan for the
student to complete the courses. - The AS/AAS hours MUST come from one degree the
student cannot take AS/AAS courses at random.
Can AA students take any AS/AAS course?
46Lets Review!
Advisors should help AA students select a
concentration area, which will help the student
select AS/AAS degree courses.
Advisors should develop an educational plan for
the student, making sure the AS/AAS degree
courses come from one degree.
Advising an AA degree student
47Test 3, question 1
- AA degree students need to complete (Pick one
answer.)
- Additional general education courses.
- 18 hours from one AS/AAS degree core.
- Additional math courses.
48Test 3, question 1 Answer
- 18 hours from one AS/AAS degree core.
AA students need to select one AS/AAS degree
program objective and complete 18 hours from that
programs core courses.
49Test 3, question 2
- AA degree students can take any AS degree course
(Pick one answer.)
50Test 3, question 2 Answer
The AA student needs to take 18 hours from the
core of one AS/AAS degree, not take AS/AAS degree
courses at random.
51Test 3, question 3
- AA degree students in the BAS program are exempt
from the foreign language requirement (Pick one
answer.)
52Test 3, question 3 Answer
The AA degree student must meet the same foreign
language degree requirement as AS/AAS degree
students for the BAS degree.
