2
A brief history of the F.A.S.I.
  • The first sport climbing competition in western
Europe was held in 1985 in Bardonecchia, not far
from Torino, on the famous Parete dei Militi in
    Valle Stretta.
  • The success was repeated the following year
(1986), when Arco di Trento joined Bardonecchia
    for a combined final ranking.

3
A brief history of the F.A.S.I.
  • The success of these events led a group of
Italian climbers to found the F.A.S.I. (Italian
Sport Climbing Federation) in Torino, 15th May
    1987.
  • The first President of the F.A.S.I. was Andrea
    Mellano.

4
A brief history of the F.A.S.I.
  • In 1989 the F.A.S.I. joined the U.I.A.A. (Union
    Internationale des Associations dAlpinisme) and
afterwards the I.C.C. (International Council for
Competition Climbing), created in 1997 inside the
U.I.A.A. in order to develop sport climbing.

5
A brief history of the F.A.S.I.
  • Though, being part of this mountaineering
organization did not satisfy the leaders of the
F.A.S.I. in mountaineering, an individual must
be a hero, in sport climbing he has to be an
    athlete.
  • The athlete always challenges his limits but
never puts his life at risk.

6
A brief history of the F.A.S.I.
  • Considering the goals of the sport climbing, the
F.A.S.I. applied to the C.O.N.I. Comitato
    Olimpico Nazionale Italiano (Italian Olympic
    Committee).
  • According to the I.O.C. (International Olympic
Committee), the C.O.N.I., in fact, gives the
basic principles of each sport activity, cares
about the health of the athletes and regulates
the correctness of the contests, competitions and
    championships.

7
A brief history of the F.A.S.I.
  • After the necessary controls on its statute and
on its central and local organization, the
    F.A.S.I. was recognized by the C.O.N.I., 20th
    September 1990.

8
A brief history of the F.A.S.I.
  • The way of considering climbing as sport climbing
brought the F.A.S.I. to become a founding member
of I.F.S.C. (International Federation for Sport
Climbing), 27th January 2007 and since 2008 it
    has been I.F.S.C. Golden Member.

    people and in the schools.

25
How the F.A.S.I. works
  • Among all the aims of a sport federation, the
F.A.S.I. claims that the most important one is
believing in fair-play and in the educational
    value of the sport.
  • Sport climbing, above all, teaches that every
achievement is always due to individual effort
    and dedication.
  • It is important that all these values are carried
    out in our society.

26
Olympic dream
  • These are the reasons why the F.A.S.I. strongly
believes that sport climbing can join the Olympic
    Movement.
  • I.F.S.C. already has the provisional recognition
    by the I.O.C.
  • The F.A.S.I. wishes that all members, aspirant
members or associate members of I.F.S.C. can
achieve the recognition by their national olympic
committee, in order to follow a common path
    towards the OLYMPIC DREAM.
